this is such a shocking story of the methods of ATOS, their masters at the DWP and Duncan Smith! It should lead to the instant termination of the ATOS contract, make this country take a look in the mirror and look what this ‘divide and rule’ let’s attack the sick, disabled unemployed..on welfare , has turned the country and some of the people into. They should feel shame!

She’s not the first – and, sadly, she won’t be the last.
I’m trying to remember another – rather similar – case where a girl with similar disabilities (and of similar age, chronologically – and, I think, mentally). All I can recall is that her name was Ruth, and she was one of the first to be told she was fit for work. I THINK her mother was a social worker, or something to do with the govt/opposition (sorry, brain isn’t functioning too well today) and she was able to fight for her daughter – and I think she won.
Anyone know WTF I’m on about…?! If so, you’re doing better than I am at the mo – cos I sure as feck don’t!

This poor lady is not the only one, in many cases people with severe conditions are considered fit for work..thats hardly a surprise when there are PRIVATE agencies who are all about getting ppl back to work even when they have been signed off sick..so, apart from being ill itself theres the period when they need to recooparate which is now being reduced..this industry is called ‘occupational health’ its quite lucrative..in one case a firm hires the OH company which advises the firm to fire people cos they are deemed ill..then also hired to advise sick people that are not really ill and should go back to work..Its money for old rope really.
One firm which advises on Occupational Health is called ATOS..you might have heard of them.

Cameron was on news today and when asked about a woman losing benefit and mobility car and such, he simply said ” i can not comment on this individual case . and went on to say why they have to do this, fact is he dose not care none of them do. this is so terrible i can not see why people just let this happen and the BBC are not covering this issue like they should, but hey what do they care they only give the public drips and drabs anyway. god bless you Fahmeena i will share your story ATOS SHAME ON YOU

i’ve not had a medical for about 4 years, since the shaw trust deemed me unemployable, even the job centre manager now, just phones me every 3 months or so ,,,, i’m one of those don’t look sick people …. with fibromyalgia …. i can’t make myself look sick, and if they don’t take any notice of things they can see, theres not much hope …. but thanks, i will try to get some help… will keep everything crossed, thanks xx

Tim – this is not a party political point that’s being made. You’re right – New Labour were the first to use ATOS for assessments. Although I think the present harshness of their testing is all down to the present government’s instructions. It’s wrong whichever party is doing it.

When he asked the assessor if she wanted to look at his feet she said she wasnt interested. How can atos regularly get it so horribly wrong and still opperate. For a mistake of this magnitude i would be sacked from my job. Hell fire, for the bad publicity my mistake got the firm they would probably sue me.
No right-minded private firm would employ these half wits to do a god damn thing. How are they getting away with it, who is monitoring their awful efforts at assesment?

C’mon, give her a chance and give her a hand making her CV, help go through the jobs boards with her, find a nice cushy civil service job in the disability/welfare sector. Maybe get her a new outfit befitting of her 1st job application?
Then drop her off for an hour or so to make the application and let her potential employers get to know her better.

i’m surprised your doctor said that, i think i’d be looking for a new one that believed in the condition, some still think it is in your head, it’s a hard struggle to get through, and depends how badly it affects you …. if you do decide to apply, get help with the forms …. i know a few people who get DLA with it but last time i applied i just couldn’t go through any more after 18 months of attempting to appeal and my appointments getting cancelled, me not being able to go to the appeal etc it made me even more ill …. i currently only get ESA .

So have I and of course you qualify for benefits! You can claim ESA and DLA (before it vanishes). DLA is paid if you work, too. Also Housing Benefit, free bus pass and prescriptions, depending on income.

He’s very knowledgeable about the condition, and firmly believes it’s a real thing. Indeed, he thought it was a terrible thing that we didn’t qualify for benefits – he said it was the government not recognising it as a debilitating condition.
Apparently it used to qualify, but since the reforms it no longer is. He may be misinformed, I don’t know, but I’m just looking for work and hoping I can manage!

Read the whole of her sister’s Twitter feed (I have). Nowhere on it does she say that Meena has actually been assessed. She only mentions a letter, and a man wanting to speak to Meena on the phone. But no assessment.

you do still have to convince them yvonne … just because you have fibro is not a guarantee, because you may still have to go through appeals ….so before you take it on, you have to be sure you can cope with it … it’s not cut and dried unfortunately 😦 my aunt recently had her DLA taken away …. she has fibro, and is full time carer to her husband who had a stroke last year … so you have to be prepared … some areas of the country may also be better than others xx

There have been statements given by former Atos employees to the training and there was a television report showing clearly that Atos employees are told to find clients fit for work despite their condition and are warned and closely watched if they do not . Employees now have had to sign the official secrets act to scare them into silence .I believe this is just the thin end of the wedge that will create the fear that will empower the Corporate sponsored MP’s to reduce the minimum wage ,remove piece by piece the need for any contractual obligations by employers .Force people who can afford it to take out private insurance for illness , disability & medical treatment . Reduce the number of treatments by Hospitals to Basic Emergency unless having personal cover & eventually only pay unemployment benefit for a short period after which you will get nothing .Public places will begin to fill up with homeless and destitute until finally under the guise of providing shelter people are moved into Camps where they will either work or perish. Would never happen ? it did in 1930`s Germany and in by the British in South Africa to the Boers.

This is the bloody problem with Atos. HOW and WHERE do they draw the line when we have people like Professor Stephen Hawkings who can work as a physicist and cosmologist just by using eye movement how can anyone be deemed as unable to work? This is in no way a dig at Professor Hawkings whose case is admittedly unique but if he can hold such a high pressure job with his high level of disability there’s not much hope for anyone to be deemed in need.

Look, I know I am responding in a negative way to this story, but I am not in a habit of accepting things at face value.. And also, more importantly, if this DOES turn out to be hyperbole, it will do a lot of damage to the causes of the people that are genuinely being affected by these ATOS assessments.. (some of my family are in this position)

Look, just because it says on this blog that she’s been assessed, it doesn’t mean she has. Even her sister hasn’t said she has actually been assessed on her Twitter feed. This won’t get taken up by the papers because, er, it hasn’t happened.

What was she claiming? DLA or ESA? ATOS don’t access ability to work, she should just claim DLA as ESA is just for people who have worked and cannot do so for an estimated period of time, and plan to return to work. If you have a lifelong or extended/ongoing disability or injury then you cannot expect to claim ESA it’s not the right benefit for you, DLA or PIP is.

Sadly the NHS seriously needs to consider euthanising the severely disabled at birth. Their quality of life cannot be guaranteed, and their care costs a great deal of money.

I have arthritis in my knees back hip pelvis and many other places when I broke bones as a motorcyclist and from various other accidents and was assessed by atos . What a joke I was sent home when I mentioned brain damage as the assessors were not qualified , on my second appointment I asked the alleged doctor if he had looked at my medical records he said no asked me to stand up lift my arms and then legs the only limb I could move fully was my left arm then asked a couple of ambiguous questions whereby any answer could be misinterpreted to suit the asker . I was informed 2 weeks later that I was fit to work and my benefits were reduced I appealed .Nearly 12 months later my appeal tribunal which I had to attend alone but there was the presiding judge, a doctor ,the usher and myself there I was allowed to fully explain my medical condition the chronic pain the difficulties I have to overcome just to live day to day, the doctor asked a few questions which I answered…I was then asked to leave the court . 5 minutes later I was asked to return where I was presented with 2 sheets of paper and told that my appeal was proven and that my benefits would be re -instated and backpaid .What I would say to all who are waiting or have been wrongly assessed is appeal and please try not to worry the usher did tell me that most appeals are successful it is only the obvious who are not . good luck and god bless you all ..

when I read Dragilcevics words i felt sick. But when you get morons spouting filth like that, to realise how ATOS can function. The reality is that a fair system would have taken one look at Meena and decided right there and then, that there is no work this person could ever do and then make sure that she & her family were reciept of all benefits and assistance. The reality is that ATOS do this because they get a cash payment for every person they review. Our most vulnerable & disabled people are being treated like a cash crop by these vermin.
The politicians are silent because they are powerless, having given ATOS a long term contract to harvest the vulnerable in the UK. They are such spineless wretches not worthy of your respect let alone your votes.

Well…as far as whether she has been assessed or not they will have access to her medical details and one can only assume that whoever actually read her file is A)beyond the normal level of ‘its more than my jobs worth to actually make an informed decision here B)arrestingly lazy/stupid/complacent.
My mother has parts of her hands missing amongst other very difficult and extremely painful conditions….perhaps they think her digits will grow back? Apparently the physio therapist (woefully inadequate to the task of actually assessing someone with multiple medical conditions including but not limited to permanently open ulcers on the wrist, fragments of splintered bone exiting a permanently open wound in the knuckle of one finger, ruptured tendons in the right wrist and a left wrist that has been broken for over four years and will not ever heal) in charge of assessing my mother is of the opinion that her health is at no risk from being exposed to unknown stress, sources of infection and repetitive strain. Marvellous. To say ATOS is a joke would be a vast under statement. To say they are a direct threat to the health and well being of a huge number of extremely vulnerable people is more accurate…also, lets bear in mind; it could be any one of us at any time in the very same vulnerable position.

Interesting because I have asked exactly the same question on Facebook about my own daughter who is shortly to be assessed for work capability. She is a lifelong wheelchair user who can’t stand or even sit unsupported. She has no use of one hand and very limited use of the other. She has a profound learning disability and is severely autistic. She is doubly incontinent. She cannot cope with any kind of change from her established routine without becoming so agitated that she self-harms. As a result of self-harm she is permanently blind in one eye and has partial sight in the other only because surgeons battled to save the sight of the eye after she blinded herself in that one too. Even having to write all that is distressing to me – and I’m going to have to fill it all in on a form for some DWP representative who will just see her as another benefit statistic and have no concept of the delightful and intriguing human being that she is. If she then gets summoned to a work assessment I don’t know how she will deal with the stress. Heaven help our country.

The reason ATOS are so arbitrary in their treatment of people and so lax in their assessment is due to the enormous sums of money they are receiving f or every person that is referred to them and successfully placed in work. That really is all there is to it; its about money and that is it. Its costing a fair whack just to implement the new ‘system’ but (and I don’t know my figures on this one sorry) they are getting more than a grand for each successful placement. It is a vile, abusive, inefficient and has already resulted in fatalities.

Dont be too harsh on Matt. His questioning of the source is valid – this could all be a set up. However, as diaryofafaker subsequently pointed out, this ruling was an assessment by form. The mere fact that ATOS are allowed to do assessments by form that have a lasting effect on vulnerable people is plainly wrong. How can this have been allowed to happen? Dreadful state of affairs.
I imagine she will get the money lost back. Eventually. It will no doubt take months which puts additional stress on her family who are most likely already coping in challenging circumstances.

Everyone should make full use of the appeals system and I suspect record numbers of appeals will be successful, thus wasting shedloads of taxpayers’ money – but the real cost is the incredible distress this is causing to disabled people and their families.

I am very much working class.. I will not bore you with the details other than to say that living through the grace of the homeless families department in the mid 80’s was one of the lowest points of my life.
I find your insinuation that I am right wing because I ask for proof from the accuser hilarious in many ways…. However I will just leave that point right here, suspended on this page as a testament to the opposition I have faced by merely asking someone making these kind of claims to back them up with substance.

The first time I got an ATOS form through the post (the second came last month.. despite being placed in the Support Group, looks like they’ll be sending me a form every year until I’m either “better” or dead) I was an inpatient on a closed psychiatric ward, drugged up to the eyeballs, half way through a course of ECT. Unsurprisingly, I don’t remember what happened in that instance. This time though, I’m lucid enough to be quite terrified. If ATOS can find Meena “fit for work” I dread to think what they will find me fit for (the Olympics, perhaps? Or maybe 10 years in a workhouse/labour camp, paying back all the government money I’ve greedily scrounged over the course of my imaginary illness.)

What seems to have been “made up” was your display of utter ignorance, but the process is indeed a bit more complex than some boorish berk at ATOS simply saying that Meena was “fit for work”.
Just as with the blank rifle round said to be issued at random to one member of a firing squad, so the responsibility for WCA “mistakes” is conveniently divided so that neither the ATOS “assessor” nor the DWP “Decision Maker” is solely to blame.
The “healthcare professional” (who could be a registered bone-jerker, a former dentist or a semi-senile and never entirely sober registered GP) compiles a report using a computer program originally written for UNUM to deny insurance claimants’ disabilities. The report will generally downplay any disabilities the claimant may have, whilst being remarkably inaccurate – it has not been unknown, for example, for a paraplegic claimant who lived in a ground floor flat and who used a wheelchair, to be “quoted” as saying that they had no difficulty going upstairs to bed. That example was all the more remarkable as the “assessor” had visited the claimant at home.
The report is subsequently sent to an utterly unqualified “Decision Maker” at the DWP who, on the basis of the farrago with which s/he has been presented, actually decides whether or not the claimant is “fit for work”. The “Decision Maker” is supposed to consider any other medical evidence, but this is often either ignored or just mislaid.
Thus, both the jerks at ATOS and the berks at the DWP can sleep easily at night, secure in the belief that they have been “only obeying orders”.
As did, for that matter, the guards at Sobibor.

Despite the grossly deluded assertions by Iain Duncan Smith (whom you will doubtless recall is a proven liar – he did not attend Perugia University) that Incapacity Benefit claimants were not checked from time to time, claimants were actually required to undergo reassessments every few years. The company contracted to perform that work was Sema Healthcare.

This is truly awful, and we should be ashamed to be citizens of an uncaring, callous nation. Thankyou, Tom for drawing this to the nation’s attention, I hope there is an inquiry, and apology and compensation. I hope this awful government steps down as soon as possible. Governments exist to protect their citizens, not as an optional career path for politicians and I don’t see anyone protecting Meena. What can we do? Praying never helped anyone. Right wing parties like UKIP are not the answer. Glenda Jackson’s angry words in the Commons this week demonstrating that there are some people with compassion who care about others. I know so many in the country feel the same. I hope to live long enough to see a caring, compassionate, courageous, civilised country – indeed world. I can totally believe the story. I’ve had major surgery on my back, am waiting for a 6th, and atos think I’m fit for work, even tho 3 doctors have told them I’m not, the appeal system takes 6 months and then you get an answer stating theres no medical reason for why I can’t work, apart from the opinion of 3 seperate doctors which they have ignored. Half the people on here have had nothing to do with atos, you try living on peanuts and being called a liar by a company that has no idea how to properly assess people

As a GP I can tell you this is happening all over the country, I’m surprised it hasn’t hit more papers yet. I have seen similarly disabled people be told they are fit for work. This is real I’m afraid.

ATOS started assessments on 8th April in ‘some areas’…..to have a result by the 11th, now that’s impressive……..8th send form out, 9th return form, 10th get a result. Now that’s a government department that should be getting bonuses for speed of decision…..

As for ATOS only starting the assessments now. You’re wrong. ATOS have been assessing disability claimants since 2008.
You might not like it, but the facts of this case are all completely genuine. And yes – ATOS decided Meena’s case would be done by form and by phone. You’d have to ask ATOS why they think they can assess in that way. Could it be to save money and make more profit? Surely not.

There are those who use and abuse the system. I know of two people who go dancing every week but always use the disabled space before going into the hall to dance for two and a half hours, and I am sure there are worse.
Common sense is a phrase that comes to mind. Solicit help from all those involved with Menna, Doctors etc. then take her along to your MP’s surgery, nothing works better than seeing the situation first hand.

After working for a charity with people who have cancer, I can also confirm this is happening. Sending a dying man to a foodbank due to the shambles of the system is disgraceful. Yes, very sick people do generally win their appeals but the considerable amount of additional stress is literally killing some people before they make it as far as appeal. People should NOT have to spend their dying days fighting the system so they can eat. G.P’s and Speialists who have worked with these people for some time are having their professional opinion discredited by the POWER that is ATOS.

They might be compounding the problems by their own inadequacies OR they might be doing exactly what their paymasters are bidding them to do. If this is ATOS’s typical candidate for a normal person who can work without need of benefits then my heavily disabled 64 year old mother with 2 wearing knee-caps that would constantly dislocate backwards causing her to frequently fall over, severe arthritis that caused her knee caps to wear in the first place and resulted in her fingers being twisted, and diabetes would’ve been forced to go back to work in the paper factories again. God rest her soul that she never had to go through this bullshit.

Jo I never doubted the situation, and would NEVER doubt the seriousness of this girls condition, however I believe I am right in thinking that everyone would be required to complete a form such as this, and then a clerical error has resulted in this furore that is occurring around us now.
It seemed all too easy for people to accept this as an absolute decree from those evil ATOS people, and not as something that would be fixed with a couple of phone calls, or a strongly worded letter… But the internet doesn’t allow for anything less than polarised views which are damaging to everyone!

Now you not only accept that Meena exists, but her condition is real and that ATOS should not have assessed her as fit for work. That’s quite a journey – so well done.
The truth is that Meena’s case is not a one off. ATOS are paid millions in taxpayers money to get the assessments right. When they make a ‘mistake’, the person has to appeal which can take months and in the meantime they get no money. Thanks for the reply! The fact that ATOS made a “clerical error” – if this is what it boils down to, which I doubt – is newsworthy enough, as the error will have caused great worry and concern to a family doing their best to care for a very disabled young woman. Meena is lucky her sisters and parents are such fierce advocates for her rights. How many other disabled people are in far less ‘fortunate’ (relatively speaking) positions? This just underlines for me how callous ATOS’s process is; even if it’s an honest mistake on ATOS’s part (…), it’s one that has caused huge distress. It highlights the cruelty of the system.

It may sound picky and i don’t mean to detract from the point of this story but I’m really not keen on the expression ‘mental age’. For some people it can be a hinderance in terms of being recognised as a whole person with emotional, physical, human, ages, needs..I’m not necccesairily referring to this person but commenting on the expression. I think language is important in terms of us recognising how we speak about and categorise other people. But i also think we should try not to be afraid to speak for fear of seeming incorrect and also to try to gentle pull each other up on things…

I have not once said that she did not exist. I did not once say that she was not asked to fill out forms to assess her disabilities.
I question your sites overblown approach to this situation by sensationalising what is clearly an error. I asked for some level of proof that she had been told to seek work. Something that you were unable to provide sources for, and more importantly, you were quite slippery in your replies surrounding proof and sources, leading me to the belief that you already knew that within this story was a grain of truth that you could fertilise with internet outrage just to gain hits to your site.
I stand by my original conviction, and nothing in that has or will change. There has been and will be no backtracking, as I believe I am right in this.

[ATOS have not made an ‘error’. They are collecting millions in taxpayers money to fulfil government targets to find as many disabled people fit for work as possible whether they are or not. They are assessing people by form and by phone to save money probably. When ATOS makes these ‘errors’, the claimant has to appeal – a process which can take months. Hi everyone,
I would just like to state some facts from my own experience with ATOS… 4 Years ago because of their poor incompetent staff, my ESA was stopped and I was unable to claim it again until I had my Appeal (this actually took 14 months to happen, because of more incompetent staff at ESA). Other knock on results from this, was the loss of our council house which we had lived in for ten years!!! Apparently even though we were on other benefits, because my ESA was stopped, so did my housing benefit, which the council failed to inform us about. Then several months later, we get a demand for £1,600.00 rent arrears!!! More appointments and hassle, the debt would not be cleared until the appeal had been heard, however, our council wanted payment straight away and where not prepared to wait for the appeal. Result was an eviction notice, all because of ATOS… (My appeal was won within 5 mins when it happened 14 months later).
Another dealing with ATOS was 3 years ago!! Their visiting doctor stated I could walk for several miles (this was by watching me walk from on chair to another with my sticks, less than 3 meters. Oh did I mention, I am virtually wheelchair bound? And any type of walking causes severe pain and discomfort. Thank fully this appeal only took 1 year to happen. Again, the appeal was won.
Many of my friends have had all similar problems with ATOS and it would appear that these so called visiting doctors are on some kind of bonus or commission award, to fail people’s medicals. Note not fact, just what it would appear to be.
At the end of the day, again from what I have seen and know about, in order to claim any type of disability benefit or ESA, you really need not to be sick or disabled, as these people always get awarded it. Yet the people that genuinely need and deserve these benefits are the ones that fail these assessments and medicals and have to go through the stress of appealing. I would also assume that the process was probably put in place, knowing, that a high percentage of people in need of these benefits, would not actually appeal. This would be because they are to scarred, cannot handle the stress, cannot do the paper work or believe no matter what they do, they have had their answer……

If this is true, I also know people whom have been assessed as fit to work and they are not fit, how much is the original assessor being paid? How much would it be for an appeal to take place. surely if a person so profoundly handicapped as this is deemed fit to work then the job most deemed suitable for them should be suggested and arranged . and safety supervision in the form of a paid attendant provided at all times . Transport to and fro the place of employment for wheelchair users will naturally be necessary and large state minibuses to ferry invalids to do vital tasks such as stocking shelves etc could be provided for this purpose.

The new laws regarding claims for personal injury which has just this month been implemented is now seeing solicitors touting for business because the state will not be picking up the tab if the claimant wins,the said claimant will now have to pay for court and legal costs out of any compensation awarded by the courts.

All those people questioning whether this is a genuine story need to stop trolling and start finding out what is actually going on,largely in silence, (outside of disability websites,) in their society, in their name. After all, Cameron et al are constantly telling us the public support welfare cuts. They maydo, because they simply have no idea what is really going on and have been fed a lot of totally false information.
Cases as extreme as this one are not unique. Horrendous cases are all too common, even if not so blatantly ridiculous as this one.
This is taxpayer’s money being wasted on Atos to carry out these contracts at £110 million per year. Despite their terrible record, which has been debated in Parliament, they have also been given contracts to now do the reassessments for DLA as well.
The opening speech in the Parliamentary debate can be seen on You Tube, as can the full debate. Michael Meacher and John McDonnel and Tom Greatrex among others have been fighting for a very long time to get these assesments stopped. The BMA has demanded that they stop, yet the onslaught continues unabated

What will it take for the public to wake up and realise this really is happening in this country and has been largely not reported or minimally reported by the MSM. I think it is becuase the stories that do leak out are SO shocking, people simply prefer to believe it cannot be true in a country such as Britain or is a one off error, that can be simply put right by a Tribunal.
Well, new legislation has been introduced which means the assessment rate will no longer be paid if an appeal is raised. In fact, now people have to have a DWP reconsideration phase before they can even lodge an appeal. There is no time limit on how long this can take – without any income. If the reconsideration is wrong, people now have to lodge the appeal themselves directly with the Tribunal, providing multiple sets of paperwork. This was previously dealt with by the DWP. Tribunals alone are taking upto a year to be heard with no income.
This is an outrage in a supposedly civilised society. People need to consider, this is the system waiting for them if they have an accident or disabling illness. No exceptions.

First of all the media has been on the whole suspiciously silent about the whole fiasco.
If you got into the support group, then congratulations. Do not assume that because you did, everyone who should be in the support group makes it.
The under cover Dispatches documentary last summer revealed that there is a 12% target for the support group. Any HCP putting more through is called in and told to conform to the “norms” The undercover GP was told to change some of his decisions.
Atos are a law unto themselves. They have a huge backlog. They are putting a lot of people in the WRAG group without medicals, so they are parked, when they should have had a medical and be in the support group.
The worst thing about all this, is when other disabled people who have had a lucky escape, feel that is because they are genuine and everyone else must either not be that bad or its just a genuine mistake. ALL disabled people should be fighting this abhorrent system, on behalf of those who cannot or who have not had such a lucky escape.

Surely anyone with a tribunal pending against their atos assessment can claim hardship allowance at least, until their case is heard, otherwise it would again be preventing people from attaining justice for themselves, a basic human right.

It’s a very simple answer why it isn’t all over the press to be verified – the family are Muslim, daughters of immigrants, and brown. Right now in the press that would target them for Daily Mail abuse and all sorts of hate directed at them; which just gets worse but such is the current climate of xenophobia and division. I can’t blame the family for not wanting to make more of a fuss. That it has attracted so much attention is however proof of what has been happening all along, up and down the country for the past two years. This is unfortunately not an isolated case – but with the rabid divide-and-conquer, I’m sure people would focus more on this girl’s skintone, religion and upbringing than the fact a young woman obviously incapable of working has been found fit for work.
Once a month, up and down the country, similar stories arise. Recently the man in a coma who was “encouraged to go back to work” – Karen Sherlock as well (rest her soul) fought against the system then died two weeks later after winning her appeal. If just ONE story creates this kind of disbelief, then surely the fact this happens repeatedly boggles the mind…even more so that We as a country allow it to happen.

I think the Tories are getting desperate. They know people are begining to realise their rhetoric has been lies. They have based their hopes on winning the next election on getting the public really angry about the benefit system. It was always their ideology to destroy it and has been a long time in the planning, as we know from the discussions with UNUM dating back even to the previous Labour government.The global financial crisis is simply a convenient cover story.
All out of work benefits including unemployment and sickness form less than 10% of the welfare bill. JSA is only 3%. Over 50% of the bill is for pensions and universal pensioner benefits, but no one mentions that, as they want the pensioner vote.
Some of the fiercest critics of those on benefits are the working poor, who have benn encouraged to feel they are being shafted. Well, they are, But not by the unemployed or sick. They are shafted by low wages, the fear of unemployment with millions waiting to take their place, and high housing costs. None of these problems are being addressed.
Over 60% of the population is on some form of benefit – most of those IN work. Working tax credits, child tax credits, child benefit and top up housing benefit form a huge part of the welfare spend. Yet for some reason, those in work do not see themselves as being on benefits.
With Universal Credit they will soon find out that their benefits will fade away too, with conditionality on finding more or better paid work. Just wait for the howls of protest when all these cuts start to hit the working poor and eventually pensioners. The media will cover that alright.

To those who are onhere doubting the validity of this claim, and saying that they do so to ‘protect those who are genuine’..
writing on a comments thread that you dont believ that this is the true, and citing (undocumented) family members to give your disagreement some semblance of added validity, does nothing to help those who are daily being hurt by the Atos assessments.
If you dont believe that this is true, but are genuine in your concern, contact the person involved and ask for proof. If you cant be bothered to do this, then by all means dispute it on a comments thread if you are happy for your comments to be taken by those who are pro-Atos and wish to continue the decimation of benefits for those in need, and paint all disabled people as scroungers.
If you dont wish to do this then do us, and your ‘family members’ who are ‘in the same position’ a huge favour ,and stop pandering to the bigots.
Truth and interigy are fragile at the moment in Britain. Bigotry and divisiveness and blame are on the rise. Decide which side you are on, and realise that if you are going on comments threads denouncing disabled people as liars and hyperbole, without proof, you are simply giving all those in the far right a greater validation for denouncing everyone.

Speaking from experience of cases like Meenas’, If her Personal Adviser at the jobcentre has not appealed on her customers behalf to the decision makers at her Benefit Delivery Centre, then she’s not doing her job properly. decision be reversed as long as the customer appeals and the adviser can show it was wrong, in meena’s case it obviously is. the black triangle campaign.org offers support and letters that a gp can send in to the BDC which quotes regs 29 & 35 which states ‘if placing a customer in the Work Related Activity Group is detremental to their mental or physical well being, then they should not be placed in it’.

Late into the fray, apologies, just wanted to answer a few things from people who seem to be happy to criticise without being in full possession of the facts:

– No. One of the problems is that the decision stands until reviewed or an appeal is won, which means that the claimant is left without the “passport” benefit, which in turns impacts things like their Housing Benefit etc.
For example, a friend of mine whose severely disabled son has just turned 16: DWP lost the DLA forms TWICE, so they stopped his DLA payments. So the DWP stopped mum’s Income Support, because now she’s not a carer anymore (no DLA, so son not disabled of a sudden), she’s supposed to go sign on. Because she’s not entitled to IS, the council stopped her Housing Benefit. Oh, and Motability took back the car she was leasing, of course.
Guess what, she still is a FT carer for her son, who is not stopping being disabled because of a paperwork issue, and she hasn’t had any money for weeks, so now she’s getting eviction notices.
Oh sure, when the DWP get off their arses and re-instate DLA, then it will all get back dated, but by then she’ll be so deep in debt and bank charges that it will take months or years to recover.

– No. Atos has been doing assessment for years, since 2008 if memory serves. You are confusing WCA with the new assessments for the changes from DLA to PIP, which will also be carried out by Atos.

Plenty of examples on the net and in the media, all you have to do is a good search and you will find plenty of evidence confirming that this is NOT an isolated incident, that is, if you are interested in knowing what’s really happening, and not just defending Atos wholesale.
BTW, Tom’s articles are clearly labelled “satire” or “true story”, etc… so there is really no excuse not to see the difference between a story that says “Richard III found fit for work” and an article like the one we’re commenting on. 😉
As for the “True Blue” blog, I have actually posted it to another friend of mine who is as blue as they get, to the point that he is currently standing for election as a Conservative, and have asked him to confirm that really represents the conservative POV. I have a feeling I know what his answer is going to be. :-p

A leading provider of healthcare services – Atos Healthcare – has teamed up with the University of Derby Corporate to officially accredit a key training course for its nurses.
The announcement means that the 300-400 Atos Healthcare nurses who successfully complete the course each year will receive a Certificate of Achievement – Disability Analysis – an award which will give them 30 credits at Level 6 of a degree award.
In a profession where all nurses will be required to obtain a degree in order to successfully qualify in nursing from 2012, the partnership is a further boost as it will enable many of Atos Healthcare’s nursing team to put their credits towards studying for a full degree top up should they wish to do so. Students require 120 credits at Level 6 to successfully obtain a BSc (Hons) in Nursing.

‘@MARIE PACE..to me if someone was in receipt of incapacity or DLA then surely to goodness DWP would be in touch with GP to conform thus not wasting time with atos..anyway..lets not forget the atos assessment letters are scary things to get as much as the assessment it self..i think most people will know that the whole atos scandal is all about kicking ppl off benefits whether they are ill or not..

Sadly, the NHS needs to consider euthanising sociopaths. Their selfish money-first, people-second philosophies cause great distress to many people and hold back the spiritual enlightenment of the species.
Maybe some French IT company could come up with a pilot scheme to prove the concept, and maybe Mark Dragilocevic will be the first to volunteer.

I have fibro and don’t qualify for benefits but only because my husband works and supports me financially. BUT I do currently qualify for DLA because my mobility is so badly affected that I need extra help with getting out and about and doing routine things that most people don’t even think about. I don’t know yet if I will qualify for PIP when that change is assessed. But bear in mind that DLA/PIP is not an out of work benefit and you can still be eligible even if you are able to work but need extra help to manage it (adapted vehicle, taxis for commuting, motorised wheelchair etc).
whether you qualify depends entirely on how badly your condition affects you, not just on the diagnosis itself.
If you apply, make sure to get help from CAB with the form.

Thank you Tom for posting this. My heart and prayers go out to Fahmeena and her wonderful family who don’t deserve such vehement! I just hope that these “people” don’t have to endure what they have to suffer each and every day. For this case is one of thousands and is not unique in any shape or form. Similar families and circumstances Who have had to face ATOS,/ WCA cruel and unjust barbarism in this day and age in the 21st Century.

The story of Meena – the 30-year-old who cannot walk and talk and has a mental age of 3 and was found fit-to-work by ATOS – is NOT true. The family made an error. I have just received an e-mail telling me so…although I have yet to tell my (soon-to-be-pissed-off-at-being-misled) newspaper and TV editors about it…Please pass the truth around. Misleading stories like this do not help the case of disability campaigning. Makes people very reluctant to consider covering such stories in the future.

Whether the story is true or not is something which will come to light soon enough, some have taken it upon themselves to do the research to find the truth behind these stories, I know what ATOS are capable of, they tried it with my Daughter, but when I started questioning the qualifications of the person who made the decision, they began to make excuses.
After a year of research, I found that their decision was made by a nurse and not a Doctor, so I began to contact my Daughters Consultants, and I kept bugging them until they took notice, I also began to record all telephone conversations, one in particular had one Consultant fuming, when they compared a Doctor with one leg who worked for ATOS as being in a similar situation and able to work, they compared a one legged Doctor to a Child with severe mental disability.
ATOS are given targets they must reach or they do not get paid, so they are being paid for every person they say can work, that in itself is wrong in so many ways, a private company who needs to reach a target or they do not get paid gives them incentive to stretch the facts, and they do that by manipulating the questions on their forms, you can get any answer you want to any question if you ask it in the right way.
I find the article less reliable because of the highlighted stupid stories below the article, like the 2016 British para Olympic team will not take part in the next Olympics because ATOS has decided nobody in Britain has a Disability, its crap like that which makes a joke of the whole situation, and does hurt the fight to stop these people, there are several stories there which do the same thing, it might be funny to some, but not one of you is immune to suddenly becoming Disabled because of an accident, or one of many many other ways it can happen to anybody.
For every fake blog the Government laugh themselves stupid, because that is what they want, it suits their cause just fine, and leaves those who need help with a life of even more misery while people fight to fix it, the idiots who treat it like a huge joke need to keep their mouths shut if they cant make a valid contribution, if you don’t understand, all you can offer in reality is sympathy to the plight of some of these very sick and needy people, but instead you keep putting your feet in your mouths while hiding behind your monitor.
Try shedding a tear every now and then, you might even get to grow a spine.
The Government have got rid of the bad back brigade, now they have moved onto bigger harder to hit targets, and they are doing this by still convincing the ignorant that these people are faking and not as sick as they make out, which is total BS.
One thing none of us can get away from is we are all going to get old and die, sadly with age comes frailty for many many people, our society is set up where we all pay National insurance contributions, the clue is in the title, “National Insurance” its not Johns insurance, or Mary’s insurance, its a contribution to look after each and every one of us should the need arise, but we now seeing more and more people who think its all about them, and that the World acts like they do, which is far from the truth, that is called selfishness, being popular amongst your friends does not make any of us any more significant on the grand scale of things, we take far too many things for ranted these days, and most of us wouldn’t last five minutes without some kind of help or back up from whatever source.
If you cant see that there is something seriously wrong with our Country right now then you have a serious problem, along with the fact we have been brainwashed into blaming everyone but those responsible for the problems we face, just makes the situation so much worse, you have to ask where will this end up, what is the eventual consequences of allowing this to continue? you only need to look at History to get your answer, every action will lead to another action and so fourth until what?
Wake up and have a good look around you, because what you think you see is not what you are actually seeing, and may whatever God you worship help us all.
What is coming over the horizon is going to hurt every single one of us, and its going to hurt more than any of us could ever imagine, its fine sharing every second of our daily lives on Twitter or Facebook, ask yourself, what are they doing with all that information? because nobody has any secrets anymore, someone is taking notes.

I assume that as this update was written “IN CYNICISM” we have to read between the lines.
The DWP letters are clear about whether one has been found fit for work or placed in the Support group.
Anyone following the tweets will understand why “the family” has made the decision to issue this statement. The sister acted in good faith but her family wish to be left alone for reasons which are clear to anyone who read the tweets.
That too shames this country.
Tom – you are clearly a decent bloke who has fallen on his sword to protect others.
Keep it up. Light must be shone into the dark, hidden corners of the fate of the disabled in this country – without fear to those involved.

I was trying to be discreet about what has really happened here without making things worse.
If you read the tweets and the princess meena diaries you may see what has happened here. I was simply trying to distinguish between the original source of the story, Meena’s sister, and the reason for the withdrawal which has come from the rest of the family, but there are reasons why they want it to go no further. More than that I cannot say. And yes Tom is taking the hit by withdrawing the original story to protect them, even if people will use it to try and discredit him for supposedly getting the story wrong. He hasn’t.

In other news, Atos have settled out of court for £2000 in a disability discrimination case for making no adjustments for a claimant’s needs in attending the Atos assessment centre and thereby making their condition worse.
Atos tried to claim that they were not bound by the Equality Act 2010 when
conducting WCA’s and so did not need to make “reasonable adjustments” for disabled people!!!!Do Atos have an exemption from UK law or what.
I wonder where this leaves them in terms of the number of centres they have which are not accessible to wheelchair users or interview rooms up flights of stairs.
