MPs and peers will return to Westminster from the Easter recess on Wednesday as parliament is recalled to debate the planned privatisation of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords in honour of the former prime minister Margaret Thatcher.
However, in a blow to Ed Miliband – who has instructed his MPs to follow his lead in responding to the privatisation in a respectful manner – David Winnick Labour MP for Walsall North said it would be “absolutely hypocritical” if parliament did not hear all sides of the argument to sell themselves off in memory of Baroness Thatcher’s legacy.
Inside sources say Russian oligarch Anton Zingarevich is particularly interested in buying up the House of Commons including all of its MPs as a package (with the exception of Nadine Dorries who is expected to be sold off to an Australian Kangaroo reserve for use as a toilet roll holder) and a mysterious Chinese bidder is thought to be interested in acquiring substantial numbers of peers currently sitting in the House of Lords for a British themed fun park near Beijing.
However, one senior backbench MP said the public should not be too unduly concerned by the plans to sell-off the UK parliament to the highest bidder:
Actually, MPs and peers from all parties have always been up for grabs by anyone willing to line their pockets, so the privatisation of parliament won’t make all that much difference at all if you think about it.

MP’s have always argued that their (talents!) if utilized in the private sector would warrant a lot more than what they are salaried as an MP, so they will be demanding salaries equivalent to what they THINK they can get in the private sector if Parliament was privatised – but you are right about them all being in someones pocket anyway at present.

Isn’t it funny that all the media have completely closed public comments about thatcher – the same media that for years has been abusing disabled people, the poor and the unemployed?
As a measure of what this country has become:
1. they have spent nearly 3 and 1/2 years and OUR money on planning Thatcher’s funeral
2. the police have licence to monitor and check all social media for signs of ‘trouble’
3. people are already being arrested by the police in pre-emptive drives on grounds of ‘disruption’
4. the media is united and totally banning any public correspondence on their websites.
5. the labout party is condemning all those who ‘celebrate’ thatchers death.
6. the tory party is busy politicising anything they can dream of to bolster Thatcher’s image and legacy
7. various people (right wing) are promoting statues , renaming Port Stanley and other memorobilia of the great one
8. we are paying for her funeral whilst the family are making an unspecified donation.
I know what this sounds and feels like – we are truly now living in a tory dictatorship with no scope for any kind of debate/ dissention

Wow, Justin: is the half of what you’ve just said true?? Hope not all, but some must be.
Yeah. It is ironic that someone so in favour of things “private”, should get a public, paid-for funeral!
Well, anyway:
To 3: really?!
4.: really?! Media clamped down on comments? Give me couple examples/links
5.: That’s probably true, if what u mean is “the top Labour leadership”: they ALWAYS want to “look respectable”. (Me: I’d like to vote for a politician who advertised himself as anything but: shades of Caucasian Chalk Circle!)
But: that WON’T be the prevailing attitude among the unions: as I know even listening to staid (and sycophantic) Radio 4: and even some of the things some Labour grandees said, such as Livingstone and Short, were pretty biting and to-the-point.
6. & 7. I’m sure they will: such people on the right will want to milk it all they’re worth!
Going back to 3.: I’m not personally advocating that people riot or “disrupt” over this: BUT I AM VERY HOPEFUL THAT THEY’LL DEMONSTRATE!

no editorials are taking any comments – they are being published in such a way as to define thatcher as a demi-god – there are no alternatives and no options.
several tory blogs are madly deleting comments that do not support this view also – especially the so-called libertarian ones – you know, they’ve never heard of dictatorships even in Chile!!

I think parliament and politicians long ago parted company with the people. I think they have already been privatised. They serve the 1%, not us. We just pay for them.

guy fawkes: You are perceptive, my friend .. I just wrote out the joke as it was told to me, but of course in heaven there are no arguments or dissensions — everthing is peace, harmony and good vibes…. Perhaps Guardian cartoonist Steve Bell is more on the mark in his Tuesday cartoon, which depicts a rendering of Gustav Dore’s painting with David Cameron, George Osborne and Oliver Letwin weeping for Maggie, whilst Maggie is plunging down into the abyss of hades with the cryptic caption from Maggie’s mouth: “WHY IS THIS PIT STILL OPEN??”

I found the selling of council housing comment interesting as it did divide the have’s and have not’s amongst the working class. Thatcher actually proposed that rents paid to benefit claimants should be turned into mortgages, which would at least have given those that have lived through 30 years of unemploment something to call their own, after all they have been paid for 3 times over anyway, but the tories resented giving the unemployed anything never mind the fact that it was from a system they had paid into.
So what’s changed IDS, cameron and co, making those who bought their council homes sell them to pay for low paid jobs and services provided in the private care homes sector, even though many are ill and should be funded by the NHS, then we have the bedroom tax forcing people from their homes and into the hands of those that can afford to buy the properties, forcing those on benefits to pay council tax on capped benefits pegged to 1% inflation and the robbing of those on sickness and disability benefits. It’s like she’s still in power to this day.
