(It’s not satire – it’s Iain Duncan Smith!)
If there were ever any doubts that Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Iain Duncan Smith is a very nasty bully of the highest order, this little anecdote will surely remove them.
Around 10 years ago – when IDS was leader of the opposition – you may remember the ‘Betsygate‘ scandal when it was revealed he’d been using taxpayers’ money to pay his wife a wage for doing nothing.
In October 2003, a senior aide to IDS – Dr Vanessa Gearson – gave written evidence to the House of Commons Select Committee on Standards and Privileges about the scandal.
In her written statement Dr Gearson revealed that she had written an email to Conservative Central Office expressing her concerns about IDS claiming money from the taxpayer for his own personal expenses—for example his lunches, haircuts, food for his own home, a mirror for his flat, his laundry and – his underwear!
Even more revealing than the fact that IDS thinks the taxpayer should pay for his underpants, Dr Gearson also describes how after she sent the email, she was reduced to tears by an “extremely agitated” and “very angry” Duncan Smith after he called her to a meeting to demand that the offending email be “expunged” from the central server:
Mr Duncan Smith did not ask me for an explanation. He did not ask why I was concerned. Indeed, besides my own apology for having formalised the matter in the form of an email I did not utter another word as Mr Duncan Smith spoke without break. I was so distressed by his manner and conduct that I was reduced to tears in the meeting.
You can see the whole written statement from Dr Gearson here:
Select Committee on Standards and Privileges – Written statement by Dr Vanessa Gearson
Yet more irrefutable proof – if any more were needed – of what a very nasty piece of work Duncan Smith really can be.

And this is the man who is leading a department of Government that forces the unemployed to work for the pittance they receive from the State and shoves the long-term sick & disabled off Incapacity Benefits?
What a thoroughly reprehensible & disgusting specimen of humankind this self-serving oaf is.
How on earth did we end up with this clutch of vile spivs & mountebanks as the Government of this country. Unfortunately I don’t believe the alternatives to the Tories are any different. We really need a new left of centre party otherwise it is very much the usual ‘buggins turn’ that characterises British politics.

There’s a special place for him and the others – they’re all as bad as each other.

Actually, no. Hearing one side of events when there are others is not how we discover the truth or make proofs.
Readers who have prejudged the situation, because they want to believe IDS is an utter shit, will believe this is irrefutable proof. Lah-de-dah psychologists call this “confirmation bias”.

Sometimes when I read opinions on the subject of benefits, I do wonder what alternatives folks would suggest. I am not saying that the government are competant (the evidence shows most ministers are not) in dealing with welfare or much else but the economics dictates that the welfare bill is out of control.
Do people think the government should allow claimants to claim benefits whilst working or not to be means tested in any way? Do you think that blatant benefit fraud should be left to continue unhindered?
Last week I commented on millions being pissed up the wall on legal aid for the unemployed to conduct vexatious litigation and the response was ‘right to justice’ and right to sue the government. I argued there was no right and that the current bill for this runs into millions. If that and claiming benefits you are not entitled to is not considered fraudulent, can someone tell me how us taxpayers can claim the same rights?

A basic income of a couple of hundred pounds weekly for, say, every British adult could be created by QE just as it’s created from nothing for the banks. The rich would keep it but the poor would spend it, creating demand, creating employment, wealth and taxes. It would pay for itself and be non-inflationary. It’s only sheer malice, ignorance and fear that stops this becoming a reality.

You know….. they have the nerve to compare people on benefits to someone like Mick Philpott (the father whose 6 children died in a fire), that man is a low functioning socio/psychopath. Sadly, certain politicians have more in common with Mick Philpott than the average person on benefits. As many are high functioning psychopaths. I watch and I see, and I see what I know to be character traits of a psychopath. Now, Cameron wants to keep 2 billion for Trident – as we are at risk of Korea? Seriously? I feel more in danger of these loons in charge of our country.
People are going to starve. Character traits of a psychopath/sociopath
– Grand sense of entitlement
– Lack of empathy, guilt, remorse or shame
– liar
– Big ego
– Charisma (ability to talk their way out of any situation)
– They use people to achieve their own agenda, not caring who they hurt in the process
– High intelligence
The list goes on…. I genuinely believe that certain politicians have more in common with Mick Philpott than the average person claiming benefits. They follow the same pattern of behaviour. The difference is that the low functioning, just hurts those around him for his selfish needs….. the high functioning can hurt millions…..
I find it alarming what will happen to this country. When people read what a psychopath is, you will see all of the character traits there 😦

Reading the Philpott case judgement, it is quite clear that keeping the two women pregnant was a means of keeping them vulnerable/controlled rather than primarily a means to access benefits. What struck me was the ages of the women when they became involved with that man. One was only 16 whilst he was in his 40s. His wife was 24y younger and the mistress 27y younger than Philpott. Obviously such a disparity would explain the power imbalance which allowed his almost complete domination.

I have been having a think (painful as that is;) ) I have come to the conclusion that IDS (and others under the Tory banner) is suffering from ASPD (Anti Social Personality Disorder):
From Wiki: “Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is described by the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, fourth edition (DSM-IV-TR), as an Axis II personality disorder characterized by “… a pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others that begins in childhood or early adolescence and continues into adulthood.”[1] They have an “impoverished moral sense or conscience” and may have a “history of crime, legal problems, impulsive and aggressive behaviour.” The antisocial personality disorder falls under the dramatic/erratic cluster of personality disorders.
It is characterized by at least 3 of the following:
Callous unconcern for the feelings of others;
Gross and persistent attitude of irresponsibility and disregard for social norms, rules, and obligations;
Incapacity to maintain enduring relationships, though having no difficulty in establishing them;
Very low tolerance to frustration and a low threshold for discharge of aggression, including violence;
Incapacity to experience guilt or to profit from experience, particularly punishment;
Markedly prone to blame others or to offer plausible rationalizations for the behaviour that has brought the person into conflict with society.”
Now doesn’t this fit the bill?

Your posting on the character traits of a psychopath is as usual a load of psychobabble which has been used to define the sick and unemployed, so I wouldn’t place much faith in their theories.
I don’t agree that mp’s should get a rise in salary if their expenses are taken away either, they should all be subjected to austerity cuts like everyone else.

I totally agree with you,that, Iain ‘dunked in shit’ is manipulative.
However, I would suggest, that, if we were to look deeper into his childhood we would observe and see ‘faulty’ family relationships lying at the core of his inadequacy. In other words, he is no different from the rest of us.
Except, his upbringing was cruel and sadistic.

I suppose Loverat you get elected to parliament which then allows you to take your pick of freebies with little or no control either. A fair system could be put in place and many attempts.have been made. It is much more pleasant to not have to push destitutes out of the way as you walk the byways and not step over too many people living on the street. The smells in days of old used to be quite unpleasant so money was spent to clear it up and fresh water provided etc.
I personally do not mind paying tax for this and if some people can’t for whatever reason then so be it.
I dread to think what the alternative would be.

50% of the benifit budget go`s on pensions whitch people have payed into to get …another 30+% go on housing benifit of whitch about 80% is claimed by working people on low wages ( who also contribute in tax ni )..this leaves about 15/20% that actualy go on benifits for the unemployed sick/disabled child benifit etc ……
.this ammount is about the same that the UK gives in forgin aid anualy or spends every month on there wars …….
i for one would rather see that money being spent on the people of britan ……
PS the total benifits bill is about the same as 20% of the tax that went unpayed by big buisness.. if they colected that there would be more than enough to pay the benifits bill and pay off the national debt without constantly bleeding the country dry

Now that tribunals have been knobbled, claimants can routinely expect to go many months without money during the appeal process. This will not be backdated whether they win or lose. Again, irrespective of whether or not they win or lose their appeals, they’ll promptly be served with another ESA50, be reassesed, found fit to work and have their benefits stopped again while they wait interminably for a reconsideration. They won’t be able to pay bills and so, if asked say by a judge, will have to truthfully answer they can’t support themselves independently financially. The fact it’s not their fault they can’t pay their bills won’t be considered relevant. I can easily believe on that basis the disabled will largely be interned in work camps, run by Cameron’s chums and costing the taxpayer far, far more than allowing independent living would have done. This is just another way of creating an income stream from the taxpyer to Cameron’s business chums.
