No doubt some of these people will be helping the economy by spending some of their £100,000 tax cut on bottles of champagne in celebration this evening.

Note – a few people have rightly pointed out that ‘worth’ is not the same as net income. The problem is that net income is a meaningless figure – it’s whatever their accountant wants it to be. That leaves us with only their (declared) worth to go on. I agree, it’s entirely possible their accountants will declare these millionaires are so ‘poor’ that they’re not entitled to a tax cut.
It’s still millionaires voting to give millionaires a tax cut though.

To get a £100000 tax cut from the cut from 50% to 45% you would need an INCOME of £2 million pounds a year, no cabinet minister earns that. The inflated state of UK house prices will account for the wealth of a lot of the people on your list. Ed Milliband and a number of shadow cabinet also have houses worth a million pounds plus and are similarly ASSET RICH.

Two points:
– Whether the money is in assets or income is irrelevant. They still have access to the money. And they have income from several sources
– Of course some Labour politicians could be on the list but that’s not the point – they aren’t the ones responsible for this legislation. It’s the work of that unholiest of unholy alliances, the Coalition.

presumably these figures are income, not assets? Lots of people have income of less than £1m, although they are over the higher rate tax limit, but have houses worth a lot more. Why not a mansion tax – or some higher bands of council tax? But this is what we would expect of both Tory and (now) Lib Dem politicians, who have tarred themselves with the Tory brush by going into coalition. Does worry me that this will help more people to move even further to the right in the “plague on all their houses” mentality.

What about a £1,000 a week per bedroom tax for those in mansions with unoccupied bedrooms.
If politicians have shares in old public now private companies, isn’t this a conflict of interest when awarding contracts or investment even aid when needed to these companies.?
If they are landlords is this not a conflict of interest for politicians when it comes to building more social housing, thus threatening their incomes as private landlords?
Those with money to invest are happy to invest in cheap labour abroad so are they fit to govern this country that so badly needs jobs and investment?
The only thing that is considered to be a conflict of interest for politicians is if they are sitting on boards of the above companies not that they have a lot of their inheritance invested in them.
Monopolies are supposed to be outlawed yet there are conglomerates eliminating any competition.
We need to end all of this corruption.

you’re spot on about the mismatch of tax cuts for rich and blizzard of cuts for low paid, disabled and all other benefits. I’m a keen follower of yours. There’s one question though about this list. The cut from 50% to 45% is on income not wealth so while all on the list are likely to benefit, by how much though? (another point is that wealth should also be taxed properly)

I think the higher rate tax cut was wrong but I believe strongly that opposition arguments should be truthful and factually correct. To suggest cabinet ministers are getting a £100000 tax cut is just ludicrous and plain wrong. The problem is that journalists, politicians and political commentators live in a sound bite world and are always looking for eye catching headlines and never mind the facts. A correct headline would be Tories give already overpaid premiership footballers massive tax cut of more than £100000 a year whilst most people suffer a fall in income.

Shame on them for trying to make everyone else poorer in their greed for money – more than they’ll ever need. I suppose it’s really all about power.
I’d love to see a breakdown of how each and everyone of them accumulated their wealth. For starters – Iain Duncan Smith has hardly any decent qualifications (he was economical with the truth on his CV) so how has he become so wealthy. Just from marrying money?
The laws will never change if the people making them have vested interests.
I can’t help feeling if the rest of the world changes to BITCOIN – and we leave them with their creative banking it could get quite interesting.

I suspect he could his larder and kitchen are fully stocked for months – his car and house are paid for ……………….. I would like him to start with an empty tank in his car, half a pint of milk, three potatoes, and a cup of sugar in his cupboards – and prepayment meters for his gas and electricity and have to decide if he eats or switches on his heating.

They are not like normal people as they usually have incomes from other places too, like private functions where they get paid to talk (sorry very bad memory cant remember the term).
When I was self-employed I earned £X in a year but after the accountant took into consideration all my expenses throughout the year it was in fact £Y usually a few thousand less but I didn’t earn a vast amount of money and would get an average of £1000 as a tax rebate.
I wish I was working now!

IDS couldn’t even last more than a few days on a tv documentary were he lived with a poor family (I think). He’s of no use to mankind and should have been put on the fire after birth and his afterbirth kept instead! Every time he opens his gob lies spill out. I personally cannot wait for his comedown, I hope he goes with such a huge bang that it can be heard all over the UK – and I think after the bang all you would hear then is cheering and laughing! I would suggest guillotining them all but they might end up as a bulking up agent in the economy burgers! And that would further taint the taste. By the way when money is short why not make your own homemade food such as burgers. You could then choose to leave out the antidepressants , the antibiotics and the arsenic ,the yummy ground up chicken feathers , the chicken litter etc etc that your loving leaders wish you to partake of.so that you can lead longer and healthier lives

Labr brought in Lord Fraud, ATOS, A4E, bedroom tax on private tenants (not to mention PFI for the NHS and don’tgetmestartedoniraq). They refused to oppose IDS’s recent law change re benefit sanctions. They aren’t the friends of the poor. their latest claim is that 900,000 claimants have panicked and signed off incapaicity benefit fearing being caught by the deadly atos designed to weedle out scroungers..except that this is not true..as the same 900,000 were diverted onto incapacity benefit to ‘hide ‘ them..so..900,000 hidden unemployed have been made to disappear.by their own means…i call that a blatant lie then..as well as the lie over benefit sanctions targets that ‘didnt exist” and were recently discovered all over the country…

the trouble is,there are people posting on forums,read skynews forum who agree with what the government is doing.they truly think people on benefits have had a cushy number with lots more perks than the people who go to work. they need to know how much people really get,as there are lies told by the government and the media. as a matter of interest I worked it out a man in his thirties,workiing 40 hours on minimum wage,wife and 2 kids,73 pounds a week better off fact.took into account free prescriptions,school dinners,housing benefit,everything.so when people say you are better off on benefits annd not working,it simply is not true.if you have a sick disabled child,and your life revolves around wether they are going to be ok that day,hospital appointments,disruptions,the distress seeing your child in pain and suffering,having painful,invasive medical tests and procedures,same goes if its your spouse or another famiily member,well yes you do get more,but at what price,its needed for the daily disruption and unpreditability ,and I am sure everyone would rather have a well healthy child/spouse etc that some extra cash.

It’s surely right to object to this tax cut. However, this article confuses assets and income. Someone with assets of £10M will only pay the 45p rate if their income in a given financial year exceeds £150K.

As my local MP (I didn’t bloody vote for him!!) Grant Shapps has a flat in Hatfield (unlived in, just used as a postal address) and a large expensive house in the ‘posh’ area of Brookmans Park. I assume he will also be claiming expenses on a central London location for easy access to Westminster as well. This is as well as being the Managing Director and owner of a large printing firm. Anything from him that they dare to shove through my letterbox gets put to good use (after immediate shredding) in the cats’ litter tray.

I am in exactly the same position as you, Derek. What is going on is obscene. I hate Ian Duncan Smith with a passion and wish the arrogant SOB would drop down dead. Every word that comes out of his mouth is a lie. It seems to me that he revels in taunting us. May he rot in hell for the suffering that he has caused so many ill people. I agree with Kevin James comment “the govt is there to help the country, not themselves’. There is obviously corruption within our govt that needs to be dealt with. How about MPs work for minimum wage so that they are not being scroungers of the state like anyone else is? Council houses are built for everyone in the house of lords and commmons so we do not encounter the vast amount of fraud by MPs in getting tax-payers to pay for their 2nd £Million homes? Those in power can not vote or be part of any decision that involves any business they have direct or in-direct contact with. Politicians/councillors/police will be held accountable for their actions and dealt with twice as severely in court for any crime due to their “abuse of position’ rather than vast pay-outs and a hand-shake.
And why not get actual qualified people like doctors, nurses, teachers, engineers etc, to make the important, and informed, decisions about our country rather than pen-pushers who are trying to please their master?
A few simple ideas but one that will make sure that “we’re all in this together’

At least they are paying some tax rather than the lazy scum living off the state. Blah blah rich people are evil blah blah. These people contribute more in tax to the running of the country every year than most of these commenters will in a lifetime.

Earn? Most of this cabal have not ‘earned’ their millions but have inherited wealth. Osborne, for example, as is well known is the heir to a vast fortune made by his family from the manufacture of wallpaper. Their families may have grafted, but they have not. Brought up in a life of luxury, educated with the other toffs at Eton, thrown bread rolls in the Bullingdon Club and been shoed into a safe (Tory) seat.

Stop me if you have heard this one..
Once upon a time, in the 1930s, a bunch of bullies in a country in Europe decided the best way to run their country was to rid itself of the poorest, sickest and least able. They blamed them for all the ills that befell that country. There was high unemployment but the bully boys spread the word that unemployed people weren’t working because they were lazy. They were made to live in overcrowded homes and became malnourished but were increasingly denied healthcare. Ordinary,comfortable people either ignored what was happening or went along with it. The bully boys made rules and regulations which benifitted themselves and their cronies while insisting what they did what for the good of all. They used the media to insist that the bully boys were the champions of “hardworking families” , implying that all those unemployed or too sick to work were not worth considering.
Yes, you have heard this one….and the punch line is…..?

Of course, the truth of here is that by reducing the rate down from 50% to 45%, the tax yield for the Government. but this is an inconvenient truth for the loony left!

Just what the Fuck do you get for a £38 breakfast? When I had a life and income the farmers markets did a breakfast and brew for seven quid that would fill you to the point of lying comatose for 6 hours, so what do get for £38?

My Mum received a letter some years ago which stated as she had three bedrooms in a social housing home and only three adults where on the electoral roll , she would have to move home or pay an increased level of rent at ‘appropriate market rates’ When she challenged it, she was told to write to the Chancellor ( Brown) as it was ‘law’-actually it wasn’t, it was a proposal by Brown to ‘better utilise existing social housing stock’ funny it wasn’t reported with so much gusto as the obviously politically motivated rants we see in the ‘papers’ each day.

This point has been made a few times in various ways. What seems to be forgotten is that if the value of their houses is taken out of the equation as non income producing, the rest of their wealth will be. And, I am sure they will have the very best advice from their City pals as to how to maximise that income.

At the end of an email to RT Hon Oliver Letwin yesterday, I wrote “I forgot to congratulate you on the huge Tax Cut you will be receiving today. Perhaps your conscience would allow you to offer help to your poorest constituents, or to set up some local Food Banks.”
At the end of his email reply this morning, he writes “I am very sorry to disillusion you, but I will not be receiving a tax cut, because my income does not qualify for top rate tax in any event.”

Richard – net income is a meaningless figure – it’s whatever their accountants want it to be. That leaves us with only their (declared) worth to go on. I agree, it’s entirely possible their accountants will declare these millionaires are so ‘poor’ they are not entitled to a tax cut.
It’s still millionaires voting to give millionaires a tax cut though.

You’re right about it being income not net worth that people are taxed on. Shouldn’t we have a tax system that is the same for everyone regardless of their political affiliation? Be nice for everyone to pay their share, be nice if Ed Milliband had paid inheritance tax on his Marxist fathers property investments, but he didn’t, be nice if Ed Balls hadn’t been paid £100000 for writing two pamphlets for Gordon Browns now closed charity, the Smith Institute, but he did. So surely if you want a tax system that applies equally to all corrupt, morally bankrupt political parties then it should be removed from political control? That has some problems to though, no taxation without representation etc. we can either lump up with the system we have or tear it down and try something else, no national tax only regional taxes, with each county making a proportional payment to national policies for example. This would certainly ensure that southern regions had to contribute even more than they do now (like the old Danegeld system really!). I’m sure when labour get back in they will instigate their own changes, perhaps cut the 10p rate again and plunge people like me back off the financial cliff. Personally I’d tear up the whole system and have a go at making real change, but that will never happen as long as we remain in a political system that is little better than a musty party oligarchy

Those on benefits pay proportionally the highest rate of tax, via VAT.

The important word was ‘proportionately’, or, in other words, that part of total income that is paid in tax. In that caculation, the percentage rates are irrelevant.

Please have a think about what you just wrote. It is logically impossible to have a lower percentage which represents a higher proportion.
There are so many arguments you can use against the tories, but if you make claims that are patently false then you jusy end up sounding like a loony, lose all the arguments, and find people still voting for them in droves.
Just a suggestion.
Otherwise you can move to Scotland where the tories are practically extinct.

But they are labour ! It’s the Tories that have voted themselves this obscene tax cut. Also worth noting: every time you hear of this tax cut the figure quoted is the cut on ONE million pounds of earnings – those who earn multi-millions get mutiple tax cuts.
