(It’s not satire – it’s the Lib Dems!)
Yesterday in the House of Lords just one Liberal Democrat peer out of 58 voted in the House of Lords for an amendment which would have prevented the abolition of agricultural wages committees in England.
This is the body which ensured decent wages for the poorest rural workers in England.
Farm workers from the Unite union had warned peers that agreeing to abolish the committees would see wages and conditions for the poorest farm workers ‘plummet’.
Of course, an awful lot of Tory peers are rural landowners who are employers of farm workers themselves so clearly they were just voting in line with their own narrow financial self-interests.
But I wonder what the Liberal Democrats’ excuse is?
Any ideas?

When you think of the blood and work it took to organise agricultural workers…not that long ago and within living memory…which led to this meagre protection, now being cast away so easily. Still, divide and rule, hey…blame it on Europe and cheap labour.

Lib Dems have the same niave faith in employers being “nice” to their workers that they have in the Tories governing this country for all and not just the rich and powerful. Mr Heath will be seeing more of the rural plebs in his constituency soon.
