(it’s not satire – it’s the UK today!)
Sue Ryder – volunteering is mandatory!
I’ve written before about how we are seeing more and more of what George Orwell in his novel 1984 called ‘Doublethink‘ – the ability to maintain two contradictory ideas in one’s head simultaneously and believe them both to be true.
Orwell imagined that a whole new vocabulary would have to be created in order to facilitate ‘Doublethink‘ – something he called ‘Newspeak‘ – and we’re seeing more of that too.
The Liberal Democrats are past masters of both ‘Doublethink‘ and ‘Newspeak‘ but unfortunately it seems to be spreading to organisations other than political parties.
I’ve just noticed the charity Sue Ryder has used a stunning example of it in their recent explanation of why they are continuing to participate in the government’s much criticised workfare programme.
You know – the programme where unemployed people are forced to work without pay or face losing most of their benefits.
In its statement – you can see it here – Sue Ryder points out how useful ‘volunteers‘ are to their organisation, which is why are going to continue to use ‘volunteers‘ from the government’s Mandatory Work Activity programme (see the footnote at the end of its statement).
Call me picky, but I always thought if you volunteered to do something it meant it was voluntary – not mandatory.
But Sue Ryder is openly expecting us to believe that people who are working for them from the Mandatory Work Activity programme are ‘volunteers’.
Surely to believe that – you’d have to hold two contradictory ideas in your head simultaneously and believe them both to be true.
Or as Orwell would have put it – you would have to engage in a spot of pure DOUBLETHINKING.
Wouldn’t you?

Is the woman in the picture getting a bonus for returning an “escapee”? Sue Ryder died in 2000. She was a controversial figure:
“Ryder moved an Amendment proposing a “Restriction on custody of children by homosexuals”. Ryder’s Amendment proposed to make it a criminal offence for ‘any homosexual man or woman, other than the natural parent, to have the care or custody of a child under the age of eighteen’ and, where this was the case, for homosexuals to be liable on summary conviction to a maximum of 6 months imprisonment. Very interesting.
Most ‘charities’ are not run along the lines of the old definition of charity. They are money making businesses for the top echelons running them.
For example, from personal knowledge:
The NSPCC home page says “every penny you give helps children who desperately need support and protection”.
I beg to differ. A highly paid solicitor (driving a very expensive sports car) gets paid for selling and buying vast portfolios of commercial properties – for the NSPCC. It can be argued that the portfolio generates funds for the charity – but somehow I doubt that’s the whole story. Linked to that are the commercial property agents and everyone else who gets paid first. And with ‘charity’ status they are exempt from paying stamp duty. Good old tax avoidance at work.
I believe most charities are now run along the lines of ‘how much can we make for the CEOs first”. They are businesses first and foremost.
‘Donations’ and ‘volunteers’ are simply a smokescreen.
Even donations by rich families such as those behind Primark and Fortnum & Mason (which someone described as the ‘nicer side of capitalism’ yesterday) to the Garfield Foundation are a whole tax avoiding issue and are not a ‘donation to charity’ http://bit.ly/gS45ky
The ‘volunteer’ bit is to make the public feel all cosy and warm inside that they are doing good. Anyone who has only read Dickens will have no idea what really goes on in most ‘charities’ today. They are aggressive businesses first and foremost. With the nice little twist of emotional blackmail. Like a Church I also know of.
Perhaps the exposure of how each and every charity operates and who receives the money would be a very good thing. Any investigative journalists out there?

Oh well I did something right for a change. Actually on a jobsite I saw jobs foru sue ryder on offer some paid but most. Voluntary even one or two that were mandatory work placements. Then there was stuff about them selling off some of their care homes to allied health company

It’s what I have always thought about charities. People do not need a hand out they need a hand up to quote Big Issue. We all need to contact Sue Ryder and protest.

Dear Tom after posting on the void about the Universal Credit and its big brother website the Universal Job Match snooping monitoring machine one would imagine that this govt considers jobless as villains instead of poor folks with little hope or future. But no we are all crooked types. As I came across this piece in daily heil a while back. Claiming that a third of jobless are a criminal underclass. This might explain this govt attitude to claimants.

Actually the double think mandatory/voluntary comes straight out of DWP and IDS . As repeated FOI requests to them on this matter relating to signing up to UJM have all returned with ‘ none of your business ‘ ie ‘ we do not view this as public interest matter ‘

This is not new to Sue Ryder. Read her autobiography tellingly entitled “Child of My Love”. She wrote something about “happily” the men got work (refurbing a stately pile to be another care home unfit for purpose (80% of Leonard Cheshire Homes unfit for purpose see thesis online Dr Laurence Clark)
The guys working for dole rates complained about Ryder;s lack of personal hygiene openly squatting and urinating on site. She lectured them it was like WW2 no time for hygiene. Seeing as how her WW2 job was driving SOE agents to airfields in UK I wonder how many grass verges she blessed with a sprinkle. Hope they weren’t dig for victory veggie sown verges.
She wrote too that the men were not respectful of Dowager Lady Ferrers (I think)
Earl Ferrers ancestral seat became Staunton harold Cheshire Home but he was tory Home Office police minister so always useful to have someone on high to suppress inquiry. So Sue was using cheap dole labour years ago. Also her care homes were staffed by student volunteers deluded they were doing caring work plus Germans escaping national service.

Oh and Nettlebed Sue Ryder Home where the widow of Head of MI5 Maxwell Knight (M) was incarcerated and unlawfully denied freedom of association and visitors by “Establishment Officers of MOD” had been the stately pile of Ian Fleming (james Bond author) older brother. Fleming older was deeply involved in setting up stay behind resistance (aux units of WW2) which idea sort of morphed postwar into GLADIO a secret NATO network originally planned in 1944 by Harry Sporborg. Well now it is clear. Attorney General responses to FOIs about the Dept of Health commissioning research by Tavistock Institute in 28 Leonard Cheshire Homes. Refuse to answer whether AG advice was sought re the ECHR rights of the Cheshire Homes inmates being researched.
And the Matron McGill death case 1972 at the home of Sue Ryder and leonard Cheshire. For 42 years police and govt law officers had somehow overlooked the autopsy and other evidence of ILEAC CREST BRUISING.
Palpating the ileac crests is a test for anal rape or attempted anal rape.
Matron McGill’s 1972 inquest did not account at all for her final 19 hours when she was arguing with Leonard Cheshire and Sue Ryder about their appalling care standards.
The double standard has raised its colours for all to see now. Evidence of sexual implying sexual assault against Matron McGill at the home of Sue Ryder and Leonard Cheshire. The Govt law officer rules it would not be in the public interest to put evidence to high court and it would not be appropriate use of police resources to make inquiries.
Meanwhile alleged abuse by Jimmy Saville at a Sue Ryder Home does merit inquiry including “Internal” inquiry by Sue Ryder charity that should not be incorporated into one overarching public judicial inquiry.
What was written in Matron McGill’s letters back in 71 and 72 ? “Sue Ryder is mean beyond belief and will not employ and pay qualified nurses. The young people here, and there are not many of them, are all student volunteers. God knows how this home will run when I go home to New Zealand”.
What was written to Health Minister Keith Joseph in 72 by local GP Dr Nini Ettlinger ?
“People are extraordinarily blinded by the smokescreen of charity. The homes are not so much a case of loving patients as of loving Sue Ryder loving patients. Sue Ryder can only function rationally when surrounded by people more in touch with human reality.”
Sqn Ldr W W Jackson who resigned from the Sue Ryder House Cttee 1972 over the Matron McGill death. He called for both Cheshire and Ryder Homes to be absorbed into the NHS.
Sue Ryder solicitor after the death wrote that the home was registered under National Assistance Act as a care home (not nursing home) meaning it had no legal requirement to employ qualified staff. Social Services could only monitor to the standard the home registered at. In effect Boarding House.
Matron McGill, a volunteer, worked 19 hour shifts Mon to Fri and 48 hour weekend resident on call. 143 duty hours per week.
If the Catholics are that anxious to make a saint out of the Sue Ryder and leonard Cheshire set up. Look no further than the New Zealand Quaker retired nurse Matron Mary McGill.

Do you remember the Harold Shipman inquiry ? There was a stage looking at weaknesses in the death registration system.
It was put to them that in 1970s Regional Crime Squad investigated the Leonard Cheshire/Sue Ryder charity set up. Suspecting identity theft via GP death registration malpractice. You may note that in 1994, a time the Monmouth MP had brought the matter to attention of Home Secretary and Attorney General, that persons unknown stole all Newport Gwent births marriages deaths records. A coincidence of course.
The Harold Shipman inquiry took advice on their terms of reference re examining the history of death registration inquiries and reports and were advised that the Cheshire/Ryder inquiry would be beyond their terms of reference.
The Regional Crime Squad found that Special Branch allegedly obstructed and corrupted their inquiries into the Cheshire/Ryder charity.
Which is now an aspect of the Matron McGill case (see above) suggesting that Special Branch would be prime suspect for contacting the duty DI at Bury St Edmunds to influence him failing to have the body photographed, to fail to call in forensic pathology and to destroy clothing and footwear to prevent forensic testing.
Funny how the govt law officer uses his secret public interest custodianship power.
I hope the Vatican read this. When it comes to saint making the UK Attorney General has kept the path clear for you by stopping any inquiry under the laws of man. Hope that all meets God’s approval ?
Back in the day when Richard D North was Leonard Cheshire’s aide I think. Cheshire was reported by police for failing to insure motor vehicle(s). A discretional decision by senior police in Suffolk was no action.
