(satire – possibly)
The Welsh secretary, David Jones, has been criticised for claiming that Tory couples “clearly” cannot provide a “warm and safe environment” in which to raise children.
Jones told ITV Wales’s Face to Face programme:
I regard marriage as an institution that has developed over many centuries, essentially for the provision of a warm and safe environment for the upbringing of children, which is clearly something that narrow-minded, Tory partners would not be able to do.
However, his comments were quickly condemned as hurtful and some Tory activists have called on Jones to apologise. One said:
Many Tory couples are parents and provide loving homes for their children. Surely if his argument is about strengthening families, then the logical conclusion is to be supportive of Conservative people who wish to marry and bring up children?”
Jones later issued a statement, saying:
I was asked on the Face to Face programme why I am against Tory couples bringing up children. I made the point of stressing that although I am fully supportive of stable, committed relationships between people of the same right-wing, fuddy-duddy views, I do not think that children should be subjected to parents who are as bigoted, intolerant and small-minded as most Tories are.
This is an opinion that I am sure most of my constituents would agree with.
