(not satire – it’s UK today!)
Nothing annoys me more than right-wing authoritarians pretending to be libertarian.
And unfortunately for me, at the moment the country seems awash with them.
If it’s not right-wing, pro-Tory, Murdoch columnist and blogger Guido Fawkes pretending to be a ‘libertarian’ rebel, it’s UKIP leader Nigel Farage claiming his party is ‘libertarian’.
Guido a rebel? Don’t make me laugh. If Guido entered parliament he wouldn’t so much try to blow it up as go for a G&T and a cosy chat with its extremely authoritarian leading members.
And as for Nigel Farage, I can’t imagine anything less libertarian than politicians deciding who you can and can’t get married to, can you?
If I’m wrong about that, then where is all the outrage from these so-called libertarians about the government’s attempts to push through secret courts?
You know – the Kafkaesque idea that a judge and a government representative can meet without you or your legal representative and decide if you’re guilty or not of something.
They don’t even have to tell you what you’ve been accused of.
I had a look at UKIP’s policy documents and their only policy I could see on justice and crime – apart from stopping all cooperation with foreign police forces – is to spend 2 billion more of taxpayers’ money on building more prisons.
Although to be fair, if the UK stopped all cooperation with foreign police forces, there’d be such an international crime free-for-all and breakdown of law and order in the UK we’ll be needing all those extra prison places.
And as far as I’m aware, Nigel Farage and his party have said nothing at all about secret courts.
If UKIP supports government policy on secret courts, that’s fine.
But they should stop this ridiculous pretence they’re libertarian because they’re not.
They’re just a bunch of right-wing authoritarian Thatcherites who don’t like foreigners and homosexuals much.
Nothing in the least bit libertarian about that.

UKIP is controlled opposition, UKIP are silent about the paedophile agenda of the EU, Vernon Coleman writes great books about EU corruption yet UKIP bookshop will not stock his books. EU is a massive mafia fraud against the biritish people, it can afford to buy itself an opposition, Edward Heath was a well known paedophile how come the media never exposed him? was he being blackmailed to sign away british rights ? we have recently seen how for a small sum our MP’s will sell themselves for I refer to the expenses scandal.

Bit of a contradiction to be a libertarian in a political party …… just saying.

Well maybe. But aren’t we allowed to be a libertarian to a lesser or greater degree? Or is libertarianism like vegetarianism – only the pure 100% thing will be taken seriously?

Its another example of the redefinition of all the words we thought we understood!
You are absolutely right Tom. In the old meaning of the word, I am unquestionably a libertarian..
However, I was using ‘Libertarian’ in the no/small state, free-marketeer, anarcho-capitalist sense… which demonstrates the ‘smoke and mirrors’ which employed to confuse us.

Quite agree Sue. The meaning of Libertarianism’s changed so much – it’s become to mean the same as right-wing authoritarianism to people like Farage and Staines..

Strange, isn’t it, that a supposedly libertarian party should be so rigidly opposed to same-sex marriage? Eating apples doesn’t ‘undermine’ or ‘devalue’ oranges, does it? We seem to be drifting more and more to the US view, that uses ‘liberal’ as a term of abuse. Mind you, Nicky Clegg hasn’t done much to help there.

UKIP are only really libertarian about certain things. I know people who were once Conservative and now vote UKIP. They are without a doubt, Church of England, little Englanders.
They would dearly love to return to the fifties where they felt comfortable. As i recall the fifties were pretty grim. England was mostly white and everyone knew their place. Everything was swept under the rug. Of coarse they would not object to secret courts.

I would consider voting for UKIP if it meant disposing of the EU. I would also dearly like to return to the fifties if the present day was the only alternative. I also prefer Farage, -the man and the politician, to either Cameron, Clegg, either Milliband, Balls Brown or Blair..
I now realise I must be a hypocritical hate figure devoid of any decency or human feeling. How odd that I would also fight tooth and nail against secret courts.
Someone mentioned controlled opposition. When will the penny drop that all political parties are controlled opposition of one flavour or another, designed to cause bickering and division amongst the many while the few advance their agenda comfortably unhindered.
