(not satire – it’s the Lib Dems!)
Let’s not forget how Liberal Democrat MP Chris Huhne – who has decided to resign today – told his wife of 26 years that their marriage was over.
Huhne casually informed her during the half-time interval of a televised World Cup football match he was watching that the press had discovered he was having an affair.
According to his ex-wife, the conversation lasted just a few minutes. He then apparently went to his study to write a press release about it before going to the gym.
I’m well aware a lot of people might think such personal revelations have no bearing on the ability of someone to carry out their duties as an elected representative.
I don’t agree.
Personally, I can’t see how someone who so casually and cold-heartedly treated someone who was supposed to be close to him could possibly care about the interests of the constituents he’s supposed to represent.
Can you?

Totally agree. Also he placed her in an invidious position re the offence. I feel sorry for her and her son

Archer got two years for perverting the course of justice didn’t he? Let’s hope Huhne gets at least that too, preferably more.

I sat next to Chris Huhne at a dinner once. He came across as a warm and genuine human being. I think what you report, if true, shows he was ashamed and embarrassed about the affair and couldn’t face discussing it. He must have mountain of regrets.

I’d like to see him be held financially responsible for all the wasted time and resources he has caused by lying for 10 years.
Absolutely, we need politicians with empathy and compassion. In fact I’m thinking of introducing MP league tables with points for empathy, compassion, intelligence, integrity and competence in maths, science and economics.
I wonder who would be bottom?

Not to mention all the money he’s been given out of the public purse over the last few years, while he’s been peddling those porkies to keep his seat in parliament.
“Failing to disclose information to another person when he was under a legal duty to disclose that information, dishonestly intending, by that failure, to make a gain.” Or fraud, as it’s more commonly known.
Just a thought.

Read of the complicated love life of the arrested female judge’s white barrister ex-boyfriend, who is 20 years older than her and left her for someone EVEN YOUNGER.
So that’s the British judiciary (or should I say knocking shop?) for you, these days, LIVING IN SIN.
If I were in charge I would lash them 100 times each, as the Koran prescribes.

Chris Huhne’s election material, a few months earlier in the GE, was all about his family values. His next notable bit of hypocrisy was his appearances with Warsi when he maintained that the UK was in danger of becoming a Greece and that it was all Labour’s fault for over-spending on public services. Now its one thing for the average back-bencher to believe the lies they’ve been told to repeat but there was absolutely no way that Chris Huhne did not know that he was lying!
So the only surprise is that he accepted the inevitable and pleaded guilty. That he would go off to the gym having just finished his marriage seems par for the course .. I completely agree Tom:
“I can’t see how someone who so casually and cold-heartedly treated someone who was supposed to be close to him could possibly care about the interests of the constituents he’s supposed to represent.”

All the continued lying for years and the wasting of the court’s time with the lies.. I know he was charged with perverting the course of justice but how about chargung him with timewasting, perjury and abuse of the court process. If they were aware, his solicitors should be rapped over the knuckles too.

All too often, the problem for politicians is that lying becomes the norm. What next for Mr Huhne…banking, perhaps?

Interesting take. Despite the facts presented you go with your gut reaction; based on a politicians ability to present himself as warm and genuine, which is their stock in trade.

No doubt there’ll be a nice ‘not so little’ pension and a lump sum but I hope that Parliamentary Standards would charge him with bringing Parliament into disrepute. Who knows these days? He’ll probably get a knighthood.

He was telling his son he loved him and his son told him to fuck off and was disgusted with him ..

Fair enough, but I have met politicians who don’t present well.
And there’s loads of pressure on their private lives. Remember how Robin Cook dumped his wife at the airport when they were about to go on holiday? CH did a stupid thing, then thought he could lie his way out of it and get his family to help. Hubris. Power corrupts. He might still be a decent guy at heart. Was highly thought of by his constituents.

Unless he had reason to believe that the GATCO camera was wrong, (and they can be), he should have accepted the penulty points. After all he was a rich man, (he might not be once he has paid his barrister). He was a MEP, and on MEP expenses he could have travelled everywhere by Concorde. I gather he lost his license soon afterwards for another offence anyway, so what was it all for?
When breaking up with anyone, it is always best to do it as courteously as possible, particularly if you are in the wrong. However I am not sure how we know the details of how they broke up, presumably someone has sold their story to someone else; going by the News today to the Times?
However Vicky Price is also not exactly up there with the world’s great parents. His kids may hate him, but do they really want their mother to ‘nail him’ and put him in prison?
And as for Ms Price, I would never guess that from the abrasive shouting, and the effing and blinding, that we are really dealing with a delicate Greek lotus, barely able to restrain the tears in court. I have contacted Jeremy Kyle and booked them in for DNA and lie detector tests.
You will probably be aware, but you were cited in Prime minister’s Question time yesterday, but you will be less happy with the fact that you were not acknowledged as the source.
