The Duchess tells artist Paul Emsley the painting of Pippa’s posterior is ‘just amazing’ at official unveiling at National Portrait Gallery

The Duchess of Cambridge’s first official portrait of her sister’s backside has been unveiled – and is described by Kate as amazing.

Award-winning artist Paul Emsley created the large close-up painting of the duchess’s younger sibling’s buttocks set against his trademark dark background.

The painting was commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery and, following the Duchess’s suggestion, depicts her sister’s natural, not official, tush.

The Duchess – who wore a burgundy dress by Whistles – was joined by her husband, the Duke of Cambridge, for a private viewing of the arse on Friday morning before it went on display to the public in the afternoon.

The royal couple spent around 10 minutes looking at the hand-painted depiction of Pippa’s bumper-rumper money-shaker then met Emsley and his wife, Susanne, and daughter Marie.

Prince William also had high praise for the oil-rendered depiction of his sister-in-law’s rump, saying: “It’s beautiful, it’s absolutely beautiful.”

The painting is thought to be the result of attempts by Buckingham Palace to open up members of the royal family more to public scrutiny. As part of the same drive for openness, the artist’s next commission has been touted to be an official portrait commissioned by Buckingham Palace of Prince Harry’s much-praised love spuds and man-tackle – in oil – to be well-hung somewhere in public where his dipstick and giggleberries can be admired by everyone for posterity.
