(not satire I’m afraid)

People have told me that Vince Cable often comes across as one of the cuddliest members of the coalition government.

Strange that. Considering he could actually be one of the most uncuddly members of the decidedly uncuddly bunch of stuffed puppets that make up Cameron’s cabinet.

Vince was Chief Economist for very, very uncuddly Royal Dutch Shell from 1995 to 1997. That’s a senior post. A very, very senior post.

Numerous independent organisations from Greenpeace to Amnesty International have criticised Shell for everything from disregarding human rights abuses to endangering the environment.

And exactly during the time Vince worked at Shell, a group of nine activists from the Ogoni region of Nigeria, including outspoken author and playwright Ken Saro-Wiwa were executed by hanging by the military dictator General Sani Abacha.

Ken Saro-Wiwa had been a fierce critic of Shell and after accusations of collusion and lawsuits were brought against Royal Dutch Shell in 2009, Vince’s company agreed an out-of-court settlement in which they paid the victims’ families $15.5m, rather than face a New York Federal court.

So – taking all that into account- are you still sure Vince is as cuddly as people think he is?
