(satire – sort of)
The government’s welfare reform minister has suggested lone members of parliament, bank bailout claimants and other people on benefits are too comfortable not having to work for their income, saying they are able to “have a lifestyle” on the state.
In an interview with House Magazine, Lord Freud is reported to have said the state benefits system – paid to MPs in the form of expenses and to bankers in the form of bailout money – is “dreadful” and discourages those well-off people from taking the risks he implied they should be willing to bear to change their circumstances.
The Conservative peer said.
The incapacity bonuses paid to feckless bankers, expenses to MPs, members of the royal family who expect the state to fund their lifestyles for year after year and only earn hundreds of pounds an hour or a few million pounds a year – are all areas where people are able to have a comfortable lifestyle without working at taxpayers’ expense.
Freud, a former investment banker, told the magazine that his background did not make him unable to understand the reality of living on state benefits:
I’ve worked both in the City and as a member of the House of Lords so I understand exactly what it’s like to be unemployed, doing nothing all day and living off state handouts.

If one considers his many and repeated misrepresentations, ‘Lord Fraud’ seems entirely appropriate.

10/10 Jayne on the Ego playing with IDS by the way 😀
Much of Grandad Sigmund’s work has been discredited as interesting speculation,
Although I do sometimes wonder about Freud, IDS et al, for their apparent need to pursue their decidedly dodgy ideologies, based upon, if not penis envy, but perhaps, intellectual envy?
Anyone can be an investment banker, if you can fill in a betting slip and read the form pages in the racing post, you can read the FT and back a few firms and make a sweep.
To truly understand the complexity and challenges of socioeconomic policy, you probably need to be a bit smarter than your average merchant banker or failed telecoms middle manager?
Our collective social consciences are being told, in no uncertain terms, we are now governed by egomaniacal, liars and thieves, who lurch from some such Freudian slip to rhetorical leakage or guilt and failure complex to another?
We are now governed by a bunch of rich kids who, grew up with inherited wealth, which somehow gives them divine right to rule?
How did we get ourselves into this mess?
It’s like being prescribed medicine by unqualified doctors or psychiatrists!

Personally I can’t wait to get a debilitating illness so I can go on benefits. Judging by what is being said about claimants being able to “live it up” I can scarcely wait to stop being gouged for tax and live the good life. Right now I’m torn between being paralysed from the neck down or having serious brain damage. Any hints on which is the best will be greatly appreciated.
