(not satire – it’s the UK press)
Hats off to fullfact.org for their tireless exposure of the lies in the gutter press about there being 120,000 ‘problem’ families in the UK.
By gutter press, I’m referring of course to The Sun, The Daily Mail, The Guardian, The Daily Star, The Telegraph, The Independent, The Daily Express, The Times, the BBC, ITV and Sky – click the above links for examples of their so-called ‘articles’ about it.
What fullfact.org discovered was that the real figure of 120,000 for the number of ‘problem’ families in the UK was a little bit of an exaggeration and is actually much lower than that. Well, quite a bit lower actually.
16 to be exact.
Unfortunately, the corrections the press were forced to make were not exactly given the same priority and exposure as the original lies.
Here’s an example of the Daily Mail’s:
This isn’t just poor reporting, bias or bad journalism. This is propaganda – pure and simple – and more evidence to the argument that we no longer have a free press in this country.
I rest my case.

But, why would affluent Tory voting, share owning, business running, conservative minded people want to read pinko liberal, loonie lefty newspaper headlines?
Propaganda writes to the prejudices and consciences of the editors and hacks who work there, feeding off the imagined appetite for their opinion?
Which is why I’m reading a free left wing blog which trys to sell me a cure for belly fat,
and not an expensive national newspaper which is trying to sell me double glazing, cars, conservatories, life insurance, holidays and wine?

No reporting or checking facts in UK or US anymore – just headlines that will attack readers – truth matters – nope; profit and propaganda

Just come across this. Your own headline is as misleading as the original story. 16 families were interviewed, your headline implies there are only 16 problem families or is it meant to be joke. Who knows how many there really are?

Clive – show me a statement in my article which is not true.
The newspapers didn’t just mislead or imply – they lied.
If there are so many ‘problem families’ why is it not possible for the newspapers to verify it?
I’ll tell you why. Because it’s a myth.
One study recently tried to ascertain how many families in the Glasgow area have three generations of unemployed – as is so often stated in the tabloids.
You know how many they found? Zero.
You really shouldn’t believe everything you’re told in the newspapers you know Clive.

Often the Daily Hate runs a hateful/sensational headline which is then corrected/downplayed if you read the full story. Judging by the online comments, most of their readers don’t get that far, so their prejudices are reinforced but the DM can claim it has clean hands.
