(not satire – unfortunately)
According to that hotbed of left-wing, anti-establishment conspiracy theories, the Daily Telegraph reckons Jimmy Savile would have been vetted by MI5 as far back as the 1960s – and Bond, Moneypenny, M etc would have continued vetting him until at least the 1980s.
Well, obviously the Telegraph doesn’t now say as much – because that might prove to be a tad too uncomfortable for its pro-establishment readership – but it did reveal in an article it printed back in 2006 that staff at the BBC, including reporters, newsreaders and presenters, were all vetted by MI5.
That clearly would have included the BBC’s star presenter Jimmy Savile.
Which rather begs this question:
Were the nation’s finest spies so incompetent they didn’t discover what apparently everyone else knew about Savile’s fondness for abusing children, or did they consider abusing children not a good enough reason to bar someone from employment?
I think we should be told. Don’t you?

Hello,
The story of the Security Service vetting/surveiling BBC staff – apparently so thoroughly, even *knowing* a leftwinger could cost your job – first broke in the mid-’80s, winning one of the reporters an award.
It continued throughout the Cold War, and does seem to raise serious questions as to how Savile and Co. could have slipped through the net!

An excellent link. Very interesting. You’re right – it’s hard to imagine the security services couldn’t have known what Savile was up to.
The only conclusion is that they must have thought being a leftwinger was much worse than being a paedophile.

From the 1960s onwards the security services will certainly have had an accumulating file on Savile and his ‘interests’. It will certainly have been dusted off and referred to at the time of his vetting prior to awards of the OBE in 1972 (Heath) and Knighthood in 1990 (Thatcher)
Sex with minors was clearly no problem. It hadn’t been for Grosser Ted himself and of course the close friendship with Margaret saw “I’m King Jimmy – they won’t believe you” alright.
Friendly help from the security services had prepared Ted for his party leadership.

The BBC should be investigating St John International head office in London. St John International in London are currently pulling out all the stops in order to present awards to two known members of the St John New Zealand paedophile gang. The awards are to be presented by the Queen’s representative in NZ, the Governor General.

Just goes to show that attitudes to children haven’t changed all that much since Victorian times, when we were shoving them up chimneys and down mines; and when street children were regarded as vermin.

MI5 vetted some categories of BBC potential staff, not all, in conjunction with BBC Personnel who issued them with their contracts: i.e Producers, Directors, etc. MI5 would probably have already had files on many of these if they had been politically active so it was a case of the BBC getting clearance. Jimmy Savile, on the other hand, didn’t come into the BBC this route. He come in via Artistes Contracts which was entirely seperate from BBC Personnel and would not have bothered to seek clearance necessarily. The issue of interest was a person’s politics. A few artistes such as actors were politically suspect, such as the Redgraves, but on the lighter side of entertainment such as Savile it wasn’t given much thought. If MI5 had a file on Savile of its own accord then it would have been up to them to inform the BBC if they felt it was relevant. If his activities had been political they may well have done but they may well have left his promiscuity, if they were aware of it, up to the BBC to deal with. If, at any time, MI5 investigated Savile because he was around Royalty and the Prime Minister they well have ascertained that he was in no way a political threat and kept his promiscuity on the back burner.

Janet – thanks for that, very interesting. Wouldn’t being involved in dodgy and illegal sexual practices be of serious concern to MI5 because of the possibility of blackmail? That could be potentially very dangerous for someone with close contact to royalty, PMs etc surely?

There is something very different about what we are seeing in respect of Paedophiles than the old traditional straightforward homosexual blackmail scenario. The latter tended to entail individuals and very small networks of homosexuals. And the threats tended to be political i.e. from the Soviet Union or professional in respect of one’s job. What we are seeing with Paedophiles is much bigger and wider networks stretching right into the Establishment, let alone international gangs, with a more forceful conspiracy of silence and a more forceful means of dealing with any blackmail. The BBC asked MI5 to continue monitoring prospective staff for their politics, not anything else, even when MI5 itself wanted to stop. But I’ve never known the BBC to be that concerned with someone’s sexual activities other than in its early days when Reith was very puritannical and dictatorial about it and Parliament told the BBC, in the 1930s, that a member of staff’s personal life was none of their business and they should keep out of it other than if it seriously affected the way they do their work. Savile’s behaviour wasn’t a political threat other than him knowing the names of people in the Establishment who were paedophiles. Look at the way the Lib Dems have covered up the alledged sexual behaviour of their own Lord Rennard (in the paper today) for the expediency of him delivering them election wins. It is in the interests of many to cover paedophiles up too in the same way.

Good response Janet. Your use of the word ‘promiscuity’ leapt out at me; we probably should keep in mind that in the 70s/80s, nobody really thought much about paedophilia. The uncomfortable reality is that even if Savile’s frequent interaction with teenagers *was* noted, it may not have been seen by the Security Service as unusual behaviour for a celebrity. I mean how many rock stars ever demanded their teen groupies produce birth certificates, right?
Placed in historical context, would MI5 have been any more guilty of complicity in covering up for Jimmy Savile than the legions of health professionals, colleagues, care providers, fellow celebs etc. who also put his transgressions (as you put it) ‘on the back burner’?
