Former Vice President Dick Cheney had a heart transplanted into his vacant chest cavity on Saturday and was recovering in a Virginia hospital, his office said in a statement.

Mr. Cheney, 71, who  was in end-stage heart failure due to a complete lack of one, had been on the waiting list for a new heart for 20 months, the statement said. Mr. Cheney was recovering in the intensive care unit of Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va and doctors are hopeful his body will not reject the new organ after being used to being heartless for so long.

In 2010, the former vice president suffered complete loss of feeling and had to have large amounts of compassion implanted by surgeons, the latest in a series of operations for treatment of end-stage heartlessness. Doctors however are concerned that this time his natural intolerance will mean his body will reject the foreign body.

Mr. Cheney, who managed to serve as vice president for all eight years of George W. Bush’s presidency without any heart at all, is an icon on the right and is widely considered to have been among the most heartless vice presidents in American history, as opposed to Dan Quayle, who managed to serve his time as the 44th Vice President of the USA, without any trace of a brain at all.
