Why is the media getting this wrong?
They all seem to be reporting that Liberal Democrat delegates rebelled against supporting the NHS bill at their conference today.
This is wrong. They didn’t. They voted for the motion supporting the NHS reform bill.
They simply amended it to exclude a clause compelling their peers and MPs in parliament to support it.
They then passed the motion supporting the NHS bill.
Yes – I agree you could argue that this means they actually managed to vote against supporting the NHS bill while at the same time voting for a motion supporting it. But then that’s the Lib Dems for you.
However, the truth is they voted to support the NHS bill.
How can so much of our media – including the BBC, the Guardian and the Huffington Post – be getting this wrong?

So is this cock-up, conspiracy, LD spin or just wishful thinking?

I think it’s probably mostly cock-up. Lazy journalism – accepting the commonly accepted line of what happened.
But also a lot of people want it to be true – so wishful thinking too.
Some who are against the reforms want it to be true to show how much even government supporters are against it. Even the LD leadership might like it in so far as they get to have their cake and eat it because they look like they’re rebelling when in fact they’re not.

That sounds about right. Chomsky says that there is an automatic filtering system such that the sort of people who are given jobs in the media, don’t even think to ask the questions. There is no need to censure or pressurise them… they are already on board.

I was at the protest in Newcastle Saturday. SO sick recovering since in a terrible state not been up to understanding the results and where we are. I’m doing a report on the day in my radio show Monday 2-4pm. http://www.generateradio.com (not been well enough yet to download and edit my soundbites, YIKES). Would LOVE someone to be interviewed live on the show to explain what the eff is happening now re NHS (my show will heavily feature remploy and NHS as well). If you’d be free to do a live phone interview with some facts between 3 and 4 pm can you contact me hazelradio@hotmail.co.uk Thanks. Please feel free to give out link to anyone to try and get more connections. Thanks. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Hazel-Quinns-Hopefully-Not-Too-Bad-Radio-Show/248108421937857
