Here is an advertisement for a job as a ‘crew member’ at McDonalds.
If you look at the information you’ll notice there isn’t any mention of salary.
That’s because there isn’t one.
This ‘job’ is forced by Jobcentre Plus on unemployed people under the threat of having all their benefits taken off them.
In other words, they have to work for Mcdonalds for free or face starvation.
In other words – slavery.
And McDonald’s saves thousands of pounds because it doesn’t have to pay the wages of an employee to do the work.
That means we, the British taxpayers, are subsiding McDonalds by supplying them with free labour.
Last year McDonalds reported a fourth-quarter profit last year of 1.38 billion dollars.
Why are we allowing this? Are we thick or something?

same tory slavery as thatcher used when she was in power I was forced to do six week suppossed work experience placements. And usless training schemes..
Then i did thirteen weeks for nothing with a local builders merchants filling bags with sand and gravel realy technical stuff the kept me on for just under a year. then just b4 they had to give me a contract they sent a delivery lorry driver up to my home with letter saying that my services were no longer required. after i calmed down a couple of days later i went down for some explanation. but no one from management would see me. But the had started others on supposed 13 week trials. i found out later they didn,t even bother keeping them on for just under the year when they had to give them a contract of employement.

It is worse than that. Cameron is supposed to be getting us out of recession by
a) getting government spending down
b) getting back to growth, more jobs, and healthier tax revenuse from these jobs.
What he is doing instead is:
a) spending money on a scheme that costs more in total than just the subsidisy to Macdonalds
b) destroying the job that used to be done by a taxpayer who is now on the dole.
He will tell you how he is determined to get the deficit down, get people back to work, and how much he is spending on it. He has really rolled his sleeves up on this.
The man is not merely incompetent. He is dangerously incompetent.
He is the man who told Europe how to sort out the Eurozone. He is now telling Scotland how much better they are sticking with the UK.
He loves the NHS.
He is trying to mend a broken Britain.
But he is not simply incompetent. He is dangerously simply incompetent.

The only time in the past 30 odd years our standard of living improved vastly was when we had a Labour government. Yep I know they did some things that could try the patience of the proverbial saint, however, I know that my family were able to get jobs, start their own businesses, go though university etc give me Labour (warts ‘n all) I miss them and I believe the country needs them for our collective welfare, if we do not get this hideous Tory government out then I fear greatly for my children, my grandchildren and all other children.

Seems that this is CONDEMs plan to get economic growth.
What would be interesting is finding out if these companies are likely to pay tax on the additional profits they will make through this scheme.
We already know that ‘Sir’ Phillip Green (head of Arcadia) is a tax dodger and somebody who only pays his invoices on final demand. Doesn’t surprise me to see he has his snout in this trough!

CONDEM promised this scheme would place 40% in jobs. It’s just managing 23%, far less that the scheme they paid almost £200m to cancel.
Depending on what figures you hear, Tesco has had almost 1400 or 7000 young people in for the scheme where they have worked for nothing saving Tesco a huge amount of wages subsidised by taxpayer money.
Tesco claim that 300 people have found a job. That is either 21% or 4% success rate. VFM? How much have Tesco saved by employing JSA claimants rather than employing people for a wage?
Do you think is it moral or ethical for Fatboy Green improving the profitability of his Arcadia Group at the cost of the taxpayer when he has avoided Billions in personal tax earned through them.
If you think this scheme could be described as either successful or VFM then your are deluded!

Tom, Aren’t they still receiving money from the government while they’re doing this?

“they have worked for nothing saving Tesco a huge amount of wages subsidised by taxpayer money. “, They weren’t unpaid during that period. Taxpayers would have paid them whether they were idle or not.

Yes JSA – which is not a wage. But this is exactly one of my points. Are you happy that taxpayers money is being paid to a big, international firm so they don’t have to pay any wages?
LikeLike
Damocles – i’m beginning to think you are a bit hard of thinking.
Yes it doesn’t cost the government any more or less during this time BUT
Tesco get thousands of free workers for no cost which boosts their profitability….
Those workers are doing the same job as permanent staff but not even getting minimum wage. How is that fair for either the worker or other retailers who don’t have resources to work with the scheme. They still have to pay min wage?
If they are going to work at least give the a decent wage and this would SAVE taxpayers money because JSA wouldn’t need to be paid to these workers AND Tesco get to audition workers with no risk because if they don’t work out they can terminate after the scheme has run it’s course.

Mr Pride: “Are you happy that taxpayers money is being paid to a big, international firm so they don’t have to pay any wages?” No, I’m not overjoyed. But then I’m not overjoyed that people are being paid from tax revenue to not do anything either.
I’d prefer it if any workfare scheme used benefit recipients to work for the public good, helping to clean up run down common areas, helping to redevelop unused greenfield sites to the betterment of the community as a whole.
However in the absence of such a scheme I still prefer to see people doing something to receive money rather than nothing. One might say well they aren’t doing nothing, they are seeking work.
Why then, if they are seeking work are large companies able to ‘create’ these jobs from thin air? Surely it would be inconvenient for them to take on and manage additional people to do non jobs? So in all probability this is work that they needed done.
So why, prior to the creation of this scheme, were these people not applying for and gaining these jobs? So then, when the government asked Tesco to participate, they would have been in a position to say “Nope, full employment here, sorry.” Instead they’ve used the scheme to, in Tesco’s case at least, gain 300 extra employees. New taxpayers who are off benefit and into the workforce. And we need more people in the workforce it’ll help emergence from the recession.
I think it’s good that people are gaining employment.
Nice chatting with you.
Tyrone Holmes: “i’m beginning to think you are a bit hard of thinking.”, There’s no need to be rude.

If Tesco takes on thousands of people under the workfare scheme, and ends up employing 300 of them, have 300 new jobs really been generated? I think not.
As has been said, this was real work that “needed to be done”. Tesco can afford to pay people at least minimum wage to do this work, so that 300 jobs that came from 1400 workfare places is not a net gain of 300 real jobs. Its a net *loss* of 1100 real jobs – as they would otherwise have had to create 1400. As these were all genuine work needs (which the market would otherwise have filled, even if it meant Tesco having to raise its wages), the scheme is destroying real jobs. And as a result, fewer real jobs now exist. Which means less money in the economy, and less tax for the government. This scheme sucks.
I’ve got no problem with long-term unemployed, or those who are judged not to be trying to find work, being put to work doing something useful for the community. But not to give handouts to corporate tax dodgers.

Damocles,
Do you really believe that Tescos was so short staffed that they couldn’t wait for this scheme to surface? What evidence do you have that these “people” were not applying for these jobs prior to the scheme? Why do you think Tescos was asked to participate? Has it ever occurred to you that these schemes are concocted by these org. to access cheap labour, just like work experience? It disheartens and speaks of your humanity or dare I say lack there of, that you would prefer Tescos to make tens of millions in profit (without any significant increase in tax revenue by the Gov) than to allow a fellow man to be given money that, lets be honest, neither of us can really live on. So you would rather see slavery continue?
Remember slavery was never abolished just made legal.

Surely what they are doing is illegal? To receive JSA you have to be ‘available for work’ if they are working already, for JSA benefit, then they are then unable to be available for work, or to find time to apply for a proper job that will pay a decent and/or living wage.
Paying someone less than minimum wage is also illegal. This applies to all, even the government and their insane schemes to make the unemployment figures look falsely reduced. Time they all got a lawyer….

As far as I know there are few test cases coming up in the courts. But I’m not optimistic. It’s not breaking minimum wage laws because it’s not technically a wage. They are also supposed to be given time to ‘look for work’ – although of course we know they don’t.

It’s not slavery it’s the beginning of a communist country.
The idea is simple. Improve a persons skill set improve the likelyhood someone will be employed. That may help 16-21 yr olds who have no chance of employment because they have either too much of too little education but what is the use of someone with ten years experience in engineering doin work experience in McDonalds? It brings them down to the other persons level and makes them simply a number.

Not sure about including the charity sector in that list. They have always been staffed by volunteers and volunteering has always been seen as a good way to gain job experience to increase employability (employers know you are capable of getting out of bed and into work 5 days a week) The fact that the Gov have brought an element of coercion into the arrangment is hardly the fault of the charities.
LikeLike
Sorry – I disagree John. Now the charities know about coercion they should pull out of the scheme.
These people are not volunteers. They are told that if they don’t ‘work’ they will lose their benefits. It doesn’t matter if they are doing other training – have other interviews or have children to look after. They have to ‘volunteer’ full time or they starve.
Plus – forcing terminally ill people to work under the threat of having their benefits taken away is just plain evil.
These charities should stop being so naive about the motive of this government and pull out of the scheme immediately.
BTW – I’ve just heard that some of them already have.

Waterstones pulled out before the public fuss as did Sainsbury’s and Shelter pulled out when the details of the new scheme were clarified. TK Maxx has pulled out since the problems experienced by Tesco’s and Tescos are now asking for the compulsion to be removed but not pulling pout of the scheme or offering to pay a decent wage or supplement to JSA.

Now you mention it – there is something Stalinist about the state paying people a crap wage to stack shelves in supermarkets. The government will be claiming they’ve achieved 100% full employment next.

Just doing some quick calculations Tesco has benefited from 336000 hours of free labour (1400 participants x 30 hours per week x 8 weeks each). That equates to a financial benefit of between £1,673,280 and £2,042, 880 (based on Min wage of £4.98 or £6.08 depending on age) subsidised by the taxpayer.

Bloody hell Tyrone – that’s a good bit of calculating. So between one and a half to two million – so far. And thats just Tesco.

There are so many stunning flaws in your argument, but to pick one. You seem to think Tesco and other such companies were woefully understaffed before Work Trials, due to lazy benefits claimants not applying for jobs. Does it not occur to you that employers have staff turnovers? Vacancies occur when staff leave – and they are being filled with free labour, rather than people earning a wage to do a job.
Clearly seeing you’ve never being through the desperation of trying to find a job, worrying yourself sick you’ll lose your home, putting your life on hold. I went through it for the better part of a year and a half. During most of that time I volunteered. Eventually I was put on New Deal and told I could no longer volunteer at my chosen charity shop but would have to do unpaid labour somewhere else (my meagre Jobseekers allowance was more than funded by my NI, before you say it). Turned out, there were no other placements – everywhere else was filled, I kid you not – so they said I could keep working in the shop. But it changed for me. I was no longer a volunteer but someone who had to get attendance forms signed, whose ‘manager’ received phone calls checking up to make sure I was attending. They took away the last shreds of pride and dignity volunteering gave me.
However, it all ended well – for me at least. No thanks whatsoever to New Deal or Job Seekers (who sent me for all the awful jobs of the day, which I duly attended and tried to get), I found a terrific job that fits my work experience and qualifications. To think, just over a year ago I was literally full of despair.
Good luck, everyone!

are they really paying a crap wage, if someone is on benefits they are getting maybe rent paid for and other free stuff, when they move into work a lot of benefits are lost, by working for free do they keep a lot of benefits? I have been told many migrants find working in UK is not cost effective any more, after paying rent and transport and food and utilities it is not worth the bother many have returned to their home countries.

Shopper Approved is based on the powerful concept called ‘social
proof’, which states that:
When a potential customer goes online to buy a product
or service, they actually want and actively
look for reassurance that they’re making the right decision. And the way they get that assurance is
from other customers’ ratings, feedback, and reviews.
This is why statistically, 77% of online shoppers
turn to consumer reviews before they decide to buy!
There’s a reason why Amazon, eBay, Sears, and pretty much every
other major ecommerce site have customer
ratings and reviews integrated into their website.
It’s because online reviews have been proven to increase
conversion, increase average transaction amounts, improve customer satisfaction, and even lower product
returns!
