According to his official diary, The Mayor of London Boris Johnson held 86 meetings with bankers and the financial services industry between 2008 and 2011. In contrast, he has held only 15 public meetings with Londoners.

Defending his frequent meetings with top city executives rather than ordinary Londoners, Mr Johnson explained:

My father was a banker, I went to Eton where a lot of my friends were also from banking families so naturally I meet these people very often. However, I can assure Londoners that as soon as they start talking about how they deserve to be paid massive bonuses and salaries despite bankrupting the country and most of the world’s economies, I immediately put my fingers in my ears and go lalala until they stop.

He also denied he supported the dropping of the 50% tax rate for those earning more than 150,000 a year because as someone who earns 400,000  a year he is one of the people who has to pay it:

The fact that I earn shedloads has nothing to do with me wanting the top rate of tax reduced. My family is stinking rich anyway and if I had to pay all my salary in tax I’m so soaked in filthy lucre it wouldn’t affect me at all. The real reason I support dropping the 50% tax rate is because my rich friends, which is all of them, have told me if I don’t support it, they’ll turn me upside down, stick my head down the toilet and shave my legs just like we used to do when I was a member of the Bullingdon Club.
